People do strange things

Today I arranged to meet a friend to go for a walk in the woods with her dogs. And while I was waiting for her I thought I would clear up some of the litter that plagues the roadside around the parking place. In five minutes or so I cleared up two sacks of litter plus a carrier bag of cleanish bottles and cans that could be recycled. Among the usual rubbish – drink cans and beer bottles, sandwich wrappers and wet wipes – I found a large tub of aqueous cream (the sort of thing used to treat babies with eczema), a new 2023 diary and a hoodie, but the strangest thing was two jars of home-made preserves in a bag. Why would anyone toss those on the roadside? My only theory so far is that maybe someone received them as a gift for Christmas, perhaps from a grandmother or some other relative, and after leaving the family gathering they decided they didn’t want anything like that and chucked them out of the car. One was fig jam and the other pepper jam or chutney, in cute little jars, dated last August and apparently unopened. Certainly they were well within their usable lives. I would have been very happy to receive them! It was sad to think someone had lovingly made those delicious preserves only to have them dumped once the recipients were out of sight. Of course I didn’t keep them, but I emptied the contents into our compost bin and washed out the jars so at least they can be used again. All rights reserved. © Text and image copyright Fleur 2023.

That person must be a very ungrateful person to throw away a gift and what a silly place to leave this sort of thing. The new diary and the hoodie could have been taken to the charity shop and the other things should have been disposed of responsibly instead of just being left by the roadside. We saw an odd shoe on the side of the road the other day and I wondered what had happened to the other half of that pair. Maybe somebody is hopping around in one shoe.

The things you find just boggle the mind sometimes! As you say you would think someone would notice that they were missing one shoe.

I know! I was half tempted to eat it myself, but I had to conclude that eating food found on the roadside may not be a good idea

@Fleura I would have been sorely tempted but it's probably not a good idea. In fact, I'm sure it's not a good idea.

What a shame to throw something that someone prepared to offer you, because surely this is what happened. I am right never to give as gifts the preserves I make.

I do give preserves to friends, but they are the ones I know will enjoy them and who often give me home-made goodies too. Others I avoid giving such things too!

Many have their priorities confused it seems. Good for you and your cleaning of the roadside.

One man's trash is another man's treasure; I think this proverb can be used in this situation.

I am always surprised at some of the stuff people throw out.

I'm sorry to hear that. Why would anyone think of wasting good food or goods. Even though there are a lot of people out there who need it. It would be better if we don't like something, we just give it to other people who need it more.
