Yes people really are odd!

Yesterday I met a friend who has some Chinese ancestry. She told me that, since it is Chinese new year, she made a big batch of pineapple tarts, a traditional new year treat, and handed some out to other parents she knew at the school gates. A day or two later, another parent who she hadn’t given any tarts to came up and said ‘Yes, those pineapple tarts you gave to so-and-so, they were very odd, a strange flavour and a sort of slimy texture, not to my taste at all!’ This seemed like a rather odd way to behave - why would you comment that you didn’t like something that an acquaintance had given to someone else? There are some strange people around – and from the stories she tells me I have to conclude that a lot of them send their children to that school! She gave me some of the tarts too – I thought they were yummy and my partner has just snuck in for another! All rights reserved. © Text and image copyright Fleur 2023.

It wasn't done thing for this parent to do.She said so either the pineapple tarts were really not to her taste or that's just sour grapes.

maybe she was trying to make the point that she wasn't given any?

@Fleura So this parent who behaved strange is also of Chinese ancestry? If so, it's more like she was hinting something, probably that she was not given the tarts.

This is a more classy way of handling that situation.

Well obviously so-and-so shared the tarts with her, but it does sound like sour grapes. Personally, I liked the moon cakes Mrs Ng gave me when I lived in Vancouver.

These tarts are so beautiful and they look delicious! Yummy. My mouth is full of liquid now. Strange people are everywhere since the society provides too much pressure. I would like to keep a distance with some strange people, you would never be friends with those who behave strangely. You could not share any ideas with them, you could never understand each other.

@Fleura I just found more and more abnormal people now. Don't know how you feel.

@maggiesunjuan Sometimes it seems like that. Or they just shout more loudly these days.

Even if she had received some of the tarts, it is very rude to make such a comment about her baking. Better to thank her and not comment afterwards. Happy Chinese New Year.

Thank you, and a happy new year to you too! I know Brits are mocked for being overly polite, but I wouldn't dream of telling someone that I didn't like some goodies they had given to someone else!

Even if that person did not like, it has been very rude to make that comment. I would never make a rude comment.

@Fleura May be that was the reason, she was not happy because she had no tarts.

Indeed no, and they weren't even given to her in the first place!

I always believe that "if I got nothing good to say, i'll just zip my mouth". I think it is so disgraceful to insult the giver specially since her opinion was not asked. It was not even intended for her. Tsk, tsk.

It sounds to me like she was annoyed she hadn't been offered any tarts so had to resort to making nasty remarks. As you say, there are lots of odd people out there.

The more generations go, some of the flavours and recipes may not similar due to different mixture and measurement.

@Fleura Yup, I have to agree with that. Though, there will be some people who are sensitive to exact measurement until they can spot the difference who is making who. My mom is like that. She knows who made the dishes though it's the same food.

The criticism really hurts, I'am sorry to hear that. As for myself, even if a food tastes bad I remain silent, not offering criticism unless asked to. If I am given a gift I will be very grateful, regardless of whether I like the gift or not I will still accept it to appreciate it.
