What do you do when there’s no myLotter to have lunch with? Go state park hopping!! Today I visited two of Florida’s 157 state parks (bringing me to four on this trip). The Ochlockonee River State Park was, like many places, slow because it’s between seasons. That didn’t stop it from being a great detour. Located just outside of the weirdest named town in Florida — Sopchoppy — it is probably overrun with people in the summer, taking advantage of the Dead River flowing into the Ochlockonee. There are boat launches, swimming and fishing areas, and signs warning about those pesky gators. Lots of shade (the trees look like a horror movie scene, don’t they?) and picnic areas. Since it was the off season, and overcast with the threat of rain, it didn’t take long to stroll along the river bank. Afterward, I decided to drive through the unpaved scenic area. Jackpot. A piebald deer. Less than 2% of the white tail deer population has Piebaldism, which gives it white fur (but not totally white, the way albinism would). Seeing one is a rare treat. What an unexpected surprise!! PHOTO COLLAGE: *four deer in the nature drive area, with the piebald clearly sticking out *the trees near the restrooms and picnic areas *looking down the Ochlockonee River

I’ve been as deep as Gainesville. I’m in the panhandle for lunch with @thislittlepennyearns today. Then I’ll probably lead the cops on a wild goose chase.

@LindaOHio — April’s mom-in-law had a post-op problem so we didn’t get to meet today. But I have to be up that way to leave the state, y’know.

Absolutely. The deer feeding place in Maine says they have a piebald that comes but I’ve never seen it. This makes up for it!

Okay, how did you get the trees to pose like that for your picture?

Many names in Florida come from the American Indian heritage that is very deep in the state.

It was a real blessing. I just wish I could’ve taken better pictures. But I didn’t want to scare them off.

@FourWalls I was like that with the kangaroos. Just stayed vey still and hoped they'd move out in the open.

The information on the “Everything Deer” site says Piebaldism is different from albinism. Like the deer cares. Or like I do. April and I will try to behave. That lasted about 0.0023837348958624876 seconds when I met Jeff.
