The Wonder of the Fern Plant

The Fern plant symbolizes eternal youth, new beginnings, and new life. In the Victorian Era, they meant sincerity and humility. They were very fashionable during that time and could be seen in most homes. The fern plant is great for removing common airborne pollutants from the home such as formaldehyde, xylene(used as a solvent for lacquers and rubber cement), and toluene (used in the production of glues, adhesives, and paint). These have been known to cause cancerous cells. The Boston Fern can combat dryness in the home because the plant raises indoor humidity. There are over 20,000 species of fern. The term pteridomania, or fern fever, was a Victorian craze that started in 1862 and continued into the turn of the century. Decorative arts used the fern in glass, wood, textiles, metal, printed paper, and even in sculpture. I think the fern is a lovely plant. It reminds me of feathers. Image from Google.

I miss the ferns we had in our garden in Latvia. Every spring they started growing and were lush and green all summer long.

I have fern in the garden, under the holly tree. It has always been there. I tried to eradicate it, but it seems unbreakable.

I used to have them hanging indoors. Now, they grow in my garden and in the woods. Gotta love those spores!
