Trump Went to East Palestine, Ohio

Sure, largely it's a publicity stunt—Trump making an appearance two weeks following the tragic train derailment in East Palestine, Ohio. At the same time, it's not un-Trump. During his presidency he regularly visited areas of the country devastated by this thing, that, or the other.
That's his style.
It's also politics, right? But all of it is. No matter the party. It's all politics. Right or wrong, it's about how things look and how things are perceived and balancing between doing the right thing and making it at least appear one is concerned. Engaged. On top of things.
Whichever it is. You decide.
The optics here, whatever their purpose may be, or whatever the outcome may be—the latter of which admittedly isn't much, considering Trump is not the president and has no power or authority to do anything more for East Palestine than is being done now (or isn't being done)—is that he was there and Biden was not.
He was there and Mayor Pete, the transportation secretary was not. He was there and Kamala Harris was not. In fact, no one from the Biden administration has stepped foot there.
Joined by Trump was his son, Don Jr., and republican Senator J. D. Vance from Ohio.
The reason ultimately that Trump was in East Palestine, Ohio is not as important as the fact that our current leaders were not there, and have not been there. And to top it all off, while no one from the Biden administration has shown up, they have also been almost dismissive of the people's concerns in that devastated area.
Regardless of anyone's politics, I think what anyone ought to be seeing is the stark contrast to the responses here, and try to remember that whatever anyone ever thought of Trump...
When the call came in, he fired up Air Force One and at least showed up.
When Americans were suffering, Biden did in fact fire up Air Force One. But he did not go to East Palestine, Ohio. He went to Ukraine. Trump undoubetedly would have postponed such a trip considering Americans needed him more at that particular time.

And, president or not, I don't think it's a bad thing Trump was there. No one person is perfect, but judging him on his faults like this helps no one. I'm glad he's there or was, even if he is powerless. support is free no matter the agenda. Knowing someone showed up means a lot.

I am not sure where anyone got the idea that Trump didn't care about Americans—well, of course I do. It was the media. Because every speech I ever listened to from Trump espoused American exceptionalism, American greatness, the power and strength of the people. I don't know how many times he reminded people the White House was not HIS but belonged to the American people.
The bottom line is that Trump cared. He cares now. Aside from his antics, which are often times off putting and that I do not necessarily appreciate, I think his presence in East Palestine simply says, "You may have elected me out, but I want to remind you that I am still here, and I still care."
That despite he is still convinced the election was stolen from him. But many do. Even I continue to question the election result.
At some point I think the American people, regardless of their political leanings, and looking at the entire presidency of Biden, which has been a complete disaster, need to come to terms with the idea that we made a huge mistake in this last election, and that we cannot afford to allow that to happen again.
As I often say, none of this is about democrat or republican. I have never desired for Biden to fail despite the fact that I did not vote for him or that I am a republican. Because I care about America more than I care about my party. Because I care more about succeeding as a country than simply winning an election.
Trump showing up in East Palestine won't change my current leanings toward DeSantis, and I have been vocal why I think it would be best for Trump to bow out from 2024. But it does remind me why I voted for him for a second time, and it might also remind a select few why they should have probably done the same in 2020.
Because the last election was not about who was the best man for the job. It was about a personality contest. We took the idea of American Idol style voting to the voting booth, and I think this hurt us.
Speaking of American Idol, one must consider the following. If a guy like Bob Dylan were to have contested on the show he never could have ever won it. But his contribution to music is enormous and undeniable. He may not have been the best singer, but he would always be the better MUSICIAN than anyone else on the stage.
The comparison could be made of Trump vs. Biden. Trump may not have been the best POLITICIAN. But he was the best choice for PRESIDENT.

@porwest I couldn't agree more. The fact Trump came into the office with little knowledge of politics I think set him apart. He saw the country as a business, and knew what the word 'united' in Unitized states stands for. He, like all people, have their flaws and faults. And, I can't help but think he might've been right about the 2020 election. Just not in the way he's made it sound. But based on the fact elections feel more like high school popularity contests. Like you said, Americans treated the vote like they were on American Idol. And, that means, Trump never really had a fair chance. They went in convinced Trump wasn't fit for President and would put someone else in, whether they could actually do the job or not.
I am not sure if Trump is planning to try again in 2024, but I hope he doesn't. He really doesn't need that kind of dumpster fire of an election it would be.

@kaylachan As I have long said about 2020, we simply don't know what happened because no one really bothered to look into it, and anyone who tried has been bankrupted, arrested, shadow banned, or silenced.
This next election cycle is going to be perhaps one of those interesting ones of any of our lifetimes.

I’m wondering if the Secret Service won’t let Biden go there because of fears of toxic air. Of course, if that’s the case then the Guv’ment should be telling everyone, not just the president.

@porwest — huh? The government that sprayed soldiers with Agent Orange, then waited 30 years to admit that might not have been a good idea, and just in the last ten years started compensating in earnest??? THAT government???

@FourWalls The government does not always do things above board. Sort of a premise for my argument on that thing that happened in 2020 you know. Ahem. :::cough, cough:::

It certainly looks good for Trump to be visiting East Palestine as he is running for president but I doubt he went there for that reason. He actually cares. Unlike our current president who felt it was more important to go to Ukraine than to East Palestine. What's happening on your own soil is way more important than what's going on in another country. And even Harris didn't step up. Wonder what she is doing that's more important than this.
And when Pete Buttigieg was asked when he will visit the city he didn't give a specific answer. Why was that?

@lovebuglena They do. But when they go after dems they are much softer and less mean about it. It's more in fun than when they do it to republicans.

I am sure Donald Trump did visit East Palestine out of the goodness of his heart and not to get brownie points from the press that despises him.

I think so too. But I still feel I need to be honest and say that when one is in politics, true politician or not (because he was an outsider, right?), they are going to do things that look good politically. So much of politics is about optics. Good or bad.
I am absolutely 100% sure he cares. I have no reason to question that. But he also wants to campaign for 2024, and he as well desires to have a bit of an "I told you so" moment.
None of those things are bad or wrong. I simply cannot deny that while they are not the whole reason he was there, they are at least part of it.

It's disappointing to see political leaders playing politics instead of actually showing up and supporting the people affected by tragedies. The contrast between Trump's visit to East Palestine, Ohio, and the lack of action from the current administration is striking. It's a sad reality that optics and perception seem to matter more than genuine concern for the citizens. It's time for politicians to put aside their egos and agendas and prioritize the needs of the people they were elected to serve.
