I'm shocked.

My mother just texted me to ask what I want for my birthday next month. She doesn't usually do that and then I wind up with something that shows how much she doesn't know me like a Michael Kors purse or Louis Vuitton wallet. I told her that I'd love a gift card for a 90 minute deep tissue massage. I said that would be heaven. She'll probably add other stuff like scented candles, scented hand soap, a plant, etc. and that's fine because those are things that I do enjoy. The next text will be asking me what I want to do for my birthday and the answer is--honestly nothing. Last year we went to Carmine's in Atlantic City but it is a 45+ minute drive each way. My sister didn't even bother to join us so I wound up inviting a coworker just so I wouldn't be alone with my parents. This year I'd rather just do pizza here or something like that. I'm in my 40s. There's no need for a big deal about my birthday.

You still deserve to have a good birthday all the same. It's nice of her to even ask.

I hope you have an enjoyable birthday. K and I are too the point that when our sons ask us what we want for Birthday, Christmas, whatever holiday, we have to struggle to come up with something. At our age, we have most everything we want, within reason, and don't need more stuff cluttering up the house. Inevitably, we give them a very specific list with brands, sizes, colors, etc, and they each order us something off the list. We do the same for each other. I've suggested for a few years now that we forgo gift giving other than gift cards or donations on our behalf to charity. I am consistently outvoted.

Well, whatever you do I hope you will enjoy it and get the present you really want. I decided to be 16 for the rest of my life and so as long as I feel like that I am fine and I no longer need the special parties or presents. I enjoy it on my own,

Your mother sounds like my MIL. She used to buy me tons of stuff that couldn't be returned and that I had no interest in. I ended up giving most of it to Goodwill. Pizza sounds like a good choice!

Wow. I am wondering how this deep tissue message be.
