House Blessing

We have a custom where the parish priest visits every home under his jurisdiction and blesses it, once a year. This is different from house warming where a house is blessed when it is newly constructed. Some prayers for the well being of those present and dead are said and the house blessed with holy water. These days, since there are many houses this is just symbolic as on possible go round houses some of which are huge in size. The priest then spends time with the family enquiring about their welfare and last but not the least collects money that is spent on the maintenance of the church. Today is the house blessing here Solitaire is all ready to welcome the priest. Do you have this custom?

They do the same here, the Priest comes to bless our houses once a year and it is always before Easter. They stay in the hallways and give the blessing to the house, they do not walk through the rooms. This is something they never did even in Italy, they stand in our room and "bless this house" with holy water.

Earlier they used to cover every nook and corner and now it is just symbolic as they have a huge number of houses to visit We just finished ours a couple of hours ago. There were loads of the bher fruit in the basket and they helped themselves - there were four of them one priest and rest holding some position or the other/

@LadyDuck That method of paying directly to the church has also been introduced here.

@allknowing The Priest comes alone here, sometimes with one choirboy. We do not give money directly, we send a bank transfer to the church.

We do some rituals with fire. The ritual is mainly for Lord Ganesha.

Sort of, we don't move into a house unless the preacher comes and prays in it.

People here can request a house blessing if they want it but I don't think it is a routine thing.

Usually, when our relatives or any church members move to a new house, they will invite the pastors to bless the house. It is done sometimes, sometimes not.
