Why even bother?

I got this letter today and thought it was great until I reread the first sentence. Exactly how is $21/YEAR going to help when one month's gas and electric is $479? Then, the $75/quarter utility benefit I'm getting through my Medicare is a little better, but the utility company charges $3.50 to process the payment, making the actual benefit only $71.50. I appreciate assistance, but geez - did you all actually remember that poor people still may not have enough to pay the bill? *sigh*

@yoalldudes It is a retirement income that is paid into over all the years we work. How much is based on how long you worked and how much you put into it over that time period. Some get twice what I get. Others get half. Other income of generally needed to make ends meet. Or a second person in the household with income.

@RebeccasFarm I know the covid benefit is ending this month, but I hope they don't cut the original. That's only $95/month. It's been nice being able to afford better food and some indulgences.

@jerzgirl I agree. I was upset when I first saw how much the city surcharges. IF I don't go with the automatic payment then I have to go to their office, use a debit card and get charged for that. I don't want to mess with cash though I do that when it comes to paying my housekeeper. My husband and I were fortunate many years ago. He managed to dig a way through discrimination and that landed him a decent state job and that state job gave him a pretty good pension. The pension plus social security keeps us afloat.

Exactly. Further in it mentions that if it doesn't cover the whole bill, I'd have to pay the rest. Well, duh! They charge that much every month just for the privilege of being hooked up. That sentence alone shows how of of touch they are with people.

That is a hefty bill to pay. Seems with our current energy crisis many are paying more than prior years. I've had a mild winter and I'm paying more than last year's bills.

Now THAT is funny. I hadn't considered that!! (Sadly, the date on the letter proves otherwise.)
