Anyone been to Jersey?

I really feel like I need to go somewhere a bit different for a holiday. And also maybe a bit warmer, so perhaps not the western isles of Scotland in spring (although I do love that part of the world). But also we are not desperately keen to go away in summer, when the weather here is nice and we have lots to do at home. And of course we are also tied to school holidays and to other weekend commitments. So we need to either go soonish, before summer here, or else plan something for October half term, but then we ran into the problem that the rest of my family all need their passports renewed this year, and for most places you need at least 6 months left on your passport so that basically means we need to renew now if we hope to go anywhere in 2023! And the passport office is currently in the news for all the wrong reasons, so if we send the passports away to be renewed, we may not get the new ones back in time to go anywhere. It all seemed rather too difficult, but then I hit on the idea of the Channel Islands! They are British Crown Dependencies, so no passports required (as long as we can produce some other acceptable form of ID). They are just off the coast of France so hopefully might be a bit warmer. We can get there on a ferry, which is all part of the excitement for the girls, and means we don’t have to fly which is good for our consciences. It’s somewhere we’ve never been, and seems to have the basics we hoped for – beaches and rockpools, perhaps even sites suitable for introductory snorkelling; history; wildlife and scenic natural places, and the famous Jersey Zoo (Gerald Durrell was one of my childhood heroes!). Of course we don’t get the novelty of attempting to speak a different language, but you can’t have everything. So has anyone else been to Jersey (I’m thinking particularly of @flapiz here of course) and do you have any recommendations? All rights reserved. © Text and image copyright Fleur 2023.

I haven't been to Jersey but I've been to The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society... It's a book by Mary Ann Shaffer and Annie Barrows.

@JudyEv That's good to know. Too often film adaptations make a mishmash of things.

I remember noticing that book in a shop one day but I didn't buy it. Obviously I should have!

This is a wonderful book and when we visited our son, I got him to find the film for us on one of his channels and the film is equally great.

I wonder whether New Jersey is anything like (old) Jersey? Or did settlers emigrate from Jersey?

@DianneN Really? Interesting stuff! I had to look him up. I had no idea that battles of the civil war also took place on Jersey. thanks for leading me to some interesting history!

@Fleura Actually, New Jersey was given the name by James, Duke of York. He was given New Jersey by his brother, King Charles II. James gave New Jersey to Sir George Carteret in honor of him being the Governor of Jersey.

Is it the same as New Jersey. I have been there and spent a couple of weeks with my niece.

Well I haven't been to Jersey but to its neighbour Guernsey. And I would definitely recommend it in Spring as the wild flowers adorns the cliff paths this time of year. It is considerably warmer. If you decide Guernsey I can definitely help with the itinerary.

We have booked Jersey now - we all want to go to the zoo (and Gerald Durrell, the founder, was one of my childhood heroes). I hope it will be as nice as Guernsey - if not I guess we can get the ferry across! We will have to compare notes afterwards

@Fleura I am sure the landscape would be a lot similar. I think ferrying would be a but costly but if you ever go I can suggest places

I wonder what the connection is between (old) Jersey and New Jersey?

@JESSY3236 Actually @DianneN mentioned the historic connection and I had to find out more about it, it was really interesting as I had no idea Jersey was embroiled in the English Civil War!

I can't help but either island would be of interest to me, especially after reading (and seeing the film of) the Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society.

@Fleura It's about the German occupation of Guernsey. I only knew very little about the occupation but it's a lovely story.

We have never been there. We have been in the north of France, that is not warm, but the Island is surely warmer than the north of France. The boyfriend of flapiz works there and it seems the weather is beautiful.

I have visited Brittany and a little bit of Normandy before, we'll see if Jersey has similarities to France.

I am a native of what was once called West Jersey (Pennsylvania) and have cousins and ancestors from East Jersey (New Jersey). I grew up eleven miles west of Trenton. But while my DNA may have once been to the Bailiwick of Jersey, I have never been there myself. I hope you go there and enjoy the holiday.
