My Mom and Grandson Never Met But...

I was just setting here typing a response to a comment on here and had this interesting thought. My mother was a bit of a hoarder. She was born in 1924 and lived through the Depression. She saved stuff thinking perhaps there would be some use for it down the line. She died in the mid-'90s. My grandson was born in 2002. They never met, right? Yet my grandson is just like she used to be. He saves old electronics thinking perhaps there will be some use for them down the line. Isn't that funny? Is this characteristic in the genes somewhere or what?

I don't know if it's in the genes or what... My parents lived through the Great Depression and saved all kinds of things. I save things, too, thinking we might need it further down the line. That's the reason Pretty sorted everything we owned before we moved to this house. She doesn't save things like I do and didn't care where it came from. If we didn't need it now, it went somewhere else before we moved.

@DaddyEvil ..........That's going small for sure. Ours is a 3 bedroom apartment. My grandson's room is packed with his stuff. We really need a garage.

@ramapo17 I was still a teenager when we moved from the farmhouse into the city after my dad passed away. Mom went through everything and sold off everything she and dad had amassed over their marriage. If we didn't need it anymore, mom sold it. It made the move a lot easier. When Pretty and I moved five years ago, we went from a 1,400 sq ft house to a 750 sq ft house so as much of our stuff had to go before we moved as we could manage and we still gave away furniture and "stuff" after we moved and saw how small the house actually was... The thrift store here in town got most of it.

My youngest nephew who never knew my late father has an uncanny facial resemblance to him.

I see that all the time. It is nice to hear an old friend of the family tell me I am just like my mother or dad.

@celticeagle That is to bad. We don't realize how much people mean to us until they are gone.

My father was a child of that era and used to hang on to certain things, but I wouldn't call him a hoarder. I don't think your grandson is, either. Being a hoarder is an obsessive-compulsive disorder. I haven't heard of it being in the genes or DNA.

It might just be a coincidence. My husband is a hoarder and food hoarder. I keep trying to declutter the house; and he keeps bringing stuff in.

Yes that is very interesting! My mother can’t believe she gave birth to someone so much like her mother when I comes to how I care for the earth. My mother doesn’t recycle or do anything to try to do good by the earth. She said she always hated how her mom would rinse the cans and recycle them and things like that so she never wanted to do all that when she grew up.

I don't think it is. But they have said some odd things are so you never know. I started decluttering heavier after cleaning out my mother in law place and then my parents. All of them lived through the depression. For those it was a learned survival thing
