We enjoyed a wind ensemble concert

We went to a concert last night given by a wind ensemble. A niece, her brother-in-law and his son were all involved. The son plays a French horn and is in the foreground of the photo. The others played clarinet on the night although they are all skilled on other instruments as well. The programme comprised film music written by either Hans Zimmer or John Williams. The French horn consists of 12–13ft (3.7–4m) of tubing, though there is extra tubing for the valves. The tubing is coiled ending a flared bell. The opening and closing of sections of the tubing by means of valves creates notes of different pitch. Placing the hand inside the bell allows minute adjustments to the pitch. As the bell faces backwards, the sound is perhaps more subdued than the more piercing tone of the trumpet. The photo is one of a number taken by Vince at the request of our niece. The French horn player will be visiting us in Ireland. He is spending about three months overseas.

Good to know that you enjoyed the concert. I currently just play guitar and keyboard. If I have time, I'd like to learn playing some Chinese musical instruments.

The Chinese have some very interesting instruments. I hope you get the chance one day to learn one of them.

Never knew there was that much tubing in a French horn! Bit of a plumber's nightmare

You'd need a very flexible bottle-brush, wouldn't you?

@Ronrybs They have some sort of flexible pipe to go down sewer pipes but we probably don't want to go there!!

I am pretty sure that this is not an easy instrument to play. Good photo.

The French horn is one of the harder instruments. The family of four boys are all very musical as are their parents.

Did you enjoy the music? I tend to like strings more than horns. But both together can make me happy.

The music was excellent. Flutes, clarinets, bassoon, saxophones, even on oboe. They did a great job on the pieces.

Always nice to attend concerts especially when there are people you know involved in the orchestra.

A different kind of a concert where only the wind ensemble is involved.

That's true but they were very polished. You didn't miss the strings.

They were very accomplished and it included quite a few younger people in the line-up.

Yes, I think so too. The people we did the brick paving for were there too so it was nice to say hello to them again.

It's interesting to learn about playing the French horn and the program you listened to. It's great that your brother-in-law is coming to visit you in Ireland!
