Daylight Saving Time! Now we have an extra hour to sit inside and watch it be cold outside. As it can’t make up its mind what it wants to do (appears Phil was right, we’re having six more weeks of winter…just not right after he made the prediction ), I’ll warm up with hot tea and another great movie song. Let’s Call the Whole Thing Off - Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers And NJ Chic? Before you say “nope,” you DO know a line from this song. Everybody does. This is the song that gave us the immortal line “You say to-MAY-to, I say to-MAH-to.” (Of course, down here in the south we say to-may-ter. ) As for why this wasn’t nominated in 1937, it wasn’t original. Les Brown had recorded it a year before it debuted in Shall We Dance. But let’s face it: Les didn’t have Fred and Ginger dancing on roller skates to the song!!! Things like this make me miss the golden age of dance numbers in movies. Some of them are absolutely magical (Donald O’Connor’s “Make ‘Em Laugh” segment), and this is one of them. Let’s Call the Whole Thing Off Written by George and Ira Gershwin Recorded by Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers From Shall We Dance, 1937 Something must be done:

To me there's nothing more joyous that Louis and Ella singing this song. I actually did NOT know it was used in a Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers movie. Nor did I know it was a Gershwin song, though I might have guessed.

Musicals back then had a good chance of being either the Gershwins or Frank Loesser.

@TheHorse “Baby It’s Cold Outside”? Guys and Dolls? “On a Slow Boat to China”? Wow, you’ve led a sheltered life.

A great old tune and dance routine. I really like Gene Kelly dancing with Jerry the mouse best of all.

It’s been recorded oodles of times. I think Louie Armstrong’s version was in When Harry Met Sally….

@FourWalls I stand corrected! (As I say to a 3-year-old when they tell me, "That's not a bird. It's a duck!")

@JudyEv or, in this case, roller skates, which were thankfully NOT high heeled.

Watching scenes like that makes me wistful. IF (big if) they’d have anything like this today it’d probably be CGI.

@FourWalls Those days are long gone. As I've been watching these films of the past, I'm learning just how good these writers, directors, actors and actresses were in the movies they made.

To me, this will always be one of the best showcases of the talent of Fred and Ginger. It amazes me every time I watch it. I enjoy the song, too.

I roller skated a lot when I was a teenager so I know how hard it is to stand up on those things to begin with. THEN DANCE on them?????

You say potato, I say potahto. Of course I know this one; and gotta love Fred and Ginger. Have you ever done a countdown of songs from the 40s and 50s? What about one with show tunes from around the 60s (Oklahoma, Flower Drum Song, Carousel, etc.) and current ones (Phantom of the Opera, Lion King)?

The oldies, huh? No, not before 1960. Next month is 1963, 60-year-old songs.
