We came home through Boddington

On our way home from a high school reunion we went through the town of Boddington (pop. 1,900) is 123 kilometres (76 mi) southeast of Perth. Apart from agriculture, bauxite and gold-mining are the major industries. The town is named after Henry Boddington, a farmer and shepherd from the 1860s who leased land in the area in 1875. There are a number of interesting artworks in the street which I’ll try to put up over the next few posts if I can find something to write about. Shown is the entry to the town, featuring the red-tailed black cockatoo which I’ve written about several times. The bird in the bottom right-hand corner is a female with the red bars. The male has only two wider bars. I think that’s right but I can’t verify it at the moment. And did you know that most parrots are left-footed?

Well, that sure beats the standard green highway signs they have around here.

Some of our towns go all out to have great signs.

How interesting most parrots are left footed. I didnt even noticed that with the two I had. I absolutely love the artwork in this photo and can’t wait to see more.

I hope you keep an eye on your two now and decide if they're right or left footed. I'm glad you like the artwork.

@JudyEv I haven’t had them for a few years. They were just too noisy and I didn’t have enough time to dedicate to them.

@shaggin The ones we've minded have been noisy too. I'll have to watch them more closely if we look after them again.

That is a very nice entry sign for the town. Is it known for Red-Tailed Cockatoos?

I'm not sure that there is more there than anywhere else really. There is nothing in the research to say it's a particularly favoured spot of theirs. There are five subspecies throughout Australia and this one is found between Perth and Albany which is about the lower third of the state so it's not unique to the area. This subspecies is listed as 'vulnerable'.

@Ronrybs Really?? That's pretty cool. And the word always makes me think of Bonnington's Irish Moss, a cough syrup.

I did not know that most parrots are left footed. I guess we have new things to learn each and every day. Have you noticed how people are getting creative each and every time?

I'm wondering how many parrots they watched before coming up with this decision.

no idea about the parrots, and I didn't even know there were black cockatoos.

You know a lot about parrots I see and even about birds. May be I could call you an ornithologist?

No, I wouldn't do that. Anyone can find out this stuff with a bit of reading. I'm also interested in our native creatures which probably helps me remember stuff.

Did Boddington become rich from gold then?

Pretty much. There is a huge gold mine there but you never hear much about it.

@JudyEv It happens that I read about "researches", and then I see "conducted among a hundred people".
