A handy little trick

I’m a keen gardener and have been tending my own garden and growing vegetables for quite some years now. But there is always something new to learn. I picked up a handy little tip the other day from one of my favourite YouTube gardeners (Huw Richards). I like to grow parsnips but the seeds take ages to germinate, and in the meantime it’s easy to forget where they are and maybe walk there or accidentally plant something else. But he suggested sprinkling radish seeds along the same row. Small round radish are shallow rooted and fast growing, so they mark the row and you also get a quick ‘catch-crop’ from the same site while the parsnips are just getting started. I decided to give it a go and this is the result today - so far so good! Radish like plenty of moisture and we are certainly getting that at the moment, so I hope I will get a crop of crisp tasty radish soon and parsnips in due course. This is a great idea. I seeded tomatoes inside in trays and the seedlings are growing fast. The hot peppers take ages to grow.

@allknowing I see a space and I plant something in it. Then a few weeks later if nothing appears I might forget I put anything there and just see an empty space, and so plant something in it!

I wish it was planting time here but with all the snow we've gotten this spring it'll be a while before I can even clean up the plots.

It is a good idea of killing two birds with one stone ! In addition, there must be a way to accelerate the germination of parsnip seeds.

Thank you. I have got them covered with some corrugated plastic sheet to warm them up a bit, so that should help. I have seen the chitting suggestion before but that sounds like an awful lot of work and faffing about!

What a good idea that was! I'm not sure we will grow anything this year.

Good for you. My mother used to soak her carrot seeds in kerosene before planting them. She'd also mix them with sand in an effort to spread the seeds more thinly.

Was the kerosene to deter creatures eating them?

@Fleura Yes, I think so although I think she also thought it helped them germinate. Sounds like wishful thinking on her part but I'm not sure now. I think it was mostly to deter ants.

I like that idea. I am going to try it with some of the veggies I will be planting.
