The sun is out and the wind is blowing. Not as bad as it was a few weeks ago when nearly 100,000 lost power in the city, and certainly not bad enough to make it feel cold. I’ll feel good with this next song on my list of favorites that were in movies and didn’t get an Oscar nomination.
#7: Everybody’s Talkin’ - Harry Nilsson
Hey, didn’t I just use him in the TV song countdown last month? Why, yes! Thanks for noticing!
Harry Nilsson was very busy in the late 60s, writing the song “One” that became a big Three Dog Night hit, appearing in TV shows (he was in an episode of The Ghost and Mrs. Muir), putting songs in soundtracks (like this one), and becoming a FOTB (Friend Of The Beatles). Oh, he was busy putting limes in coconuts, too.
There’s a Nilsson song on my 100 favorites list…not this song, though. This is probably Harry’s best-known recording…and, like another Nilsson hit (“Without You”), Harry didn’t write it.
This goes back to folk singer/songwriter Fred Neil, who wrote and recorded it in 1966. It became famous when Nilsson recorded it in 1968. The song was included in the movie Midnight Cowboy (the only X-rated movie to ever win “best picture”…and if you’re wondering, it was rated X for the subject matter [homosexual prostitution], not for explicit sex), which made it even more popular.
Oh, and some trivia: Warren Zevon’s first gold album was NOT hit 1978 album Excitable Boy but rather the soundtrack to Midnight Cowboy. He wrote one of the songs on the soundtrack (“She Quit Me”).
All of that has very little to do with how good this song is, or how enduring it is.

To die for Four Walls, at least for me.
This has to be one of my all time favorite songs and films.

@FourWalls You got me here. I had no idea that Zevon had any tie in with Midnight Cowboy.

Glen was great at picking songs to cover; however, unlike Linda Ronstadt, he wasn’t as good at delivering them.

I never saw the movie and never heard this song, I do like a lot of other songs by Harry Nilsson and wrote an article on him,

I do hope you enjoyed the song, at least. It’s one of Nilsson’s biggest hits.

Oh my gosh how terrible so many lost powder. My daughter is working today and the furnace there needs to be repaired so for the big old church building there is only two space heaters. I think they shouldn’t have opened. No one wants to work or shop in a place so cold.
I have never heard of this song before.

@FourWalls gosh that’s terrible how long ago was that. I can’t remember any of the names of them. I remember one was Sandy about 4 years ago I think that’s the only one I remember.

Ah, you’re a kid.
That really wasn’t nearly as bad as the ice storm and/or Ike, where 95% of the city lost power.
It took a week for me to get my power back after Ike.

@shaggin — Ike was September 2008, and the ice storm was February 2009.

Definitely! I like it when a singer has a “big hit” or two and it (or they) are memorable!!

Great tune and movie for sure. Fred Neil wrote it and sang it even better.

A "trove of trivia" there! And I enjoyed every X, R, and PG mention, lol. They say John Lennon and Harry were super tight during Lennon's mid-life crisis otherwise known as "the lost weekend" or something like that. Well, everyone needs a drinking side kick and guess Harry was John's.
Oh yes, I really like this song as much as a lime in my coconut.
Who wouldn't like to be "sailing on a summer breeze."

A lot of us need 18-month “weekends,” with or without the indulgences Lennon had during his “lost weekend.”
