Not the lightning we saw on our way home,

but it could have been its twin.
We left the campground early today because thunderstorms were forecast for the area around Carolina Beach. Detaching from the utilities and hitching up in heavy rain isn't my idea of a good way to end a great weekend of camping.
No rain caught us until we reached the north side of Wilmington and started on I-40. Then, pieces of water began to spatter on the windshield. Eventually, they were joined by many, many of their friends. Ultimately, the lightning began to flash, and the thunder began to roll.
At times, the rain came down so heavy that traffic slowed down to far below the posted speed limit of 70mph/112kph. The trip took about 30 minutes longer than usual and was more tiring than normal. Water on the highway made hydroplaning a real worry.
We were almost home when we saw the one and only accident along our route. Someone had slid off the road and spun out in the grass along the highway. Fire and rescue were already there making sure everyone and everything was okay.
The rest of the trip was uneventful. I got the camper parked, we unloaded, got cleaned up, and had a late lunch. Thankfully, the rain had all but stopped by the time we reached the house.
So, how did your weekend conclude?

You're right, not the best way to start or end a weekend. At least you made it home safe and sound.

That must have been scary. Maybe it was the remainder of those storms that hit Miss. They didn't make it up here.

I hate flat places like that. That is the most dangerous place in world if you think about. Flash floods, lightning strikes, tornadoes, you are toast if get caught in a flat place that is so open when mother nature decides to strike.

Glad that you reached safely to home. I don't like to drive in rain and avoid it as much as I can.
It was a bit hectic weekend here with lots happening. But since it was all for a good reason, I don't have any complaints
. Anyways it's a two month long summer vacation for me here, so I can stay relaxed on weekdays too.

@arunima25 If my wife has her way, my retirement will be a misery of honey-do lists and dog walking.

You know DW, I would much rather drive in snow than rain because of that hydroplaning..I am terrified of it as someone went slam right into the back of me when I was young..of course I was in one of my first cars..a VW..slug bug so they destroyed the car and nearly sent myself and my pregnant sister to the morque.
Glad you made it home safe.
