Have we become hardened and complacent? Does it really have to be this way?

I flipped on the news in time to hear the line--''The 'latest'' school shooting is in Nashville, TN. Shooter is dead, there appear to be injuries, no numbers reported yet.'' The school involved is a private school for very young children. Seriously how SAD is it that we are so used to school shootings that they can say it's the ''latest'' one and it's true--it is. The US has more guns than it has people. We have so many gun owners out there that do not practice gun safety, such a big problem that numerous children have managed to take a gun to school that they brought from home. Not long ago, a teacher was shot by a 6-year-old in Virginia. I know there are people here in mylot land who have school age children, or grandchildren, in schools. How hard would it be to have to have talks with your little child about trying to be safe from an active shooter. We already have a severe teacher shortage in the US. I read of incidents/fights/guns found and so forth, nearly every day. I find it appalling that children now have to practice active shooter drills and must know what to try to do if there was an active shooter. When I went to school, we did tornado drills and if there was a threat of any other type, we were sent to sit in the hallways about once a year for practice, with books on our heads. I've never been a big fan of homeschooling, as I always thought kids needed friends and needed to be socialized with people other than family. If I had children in school now, I think I would stay home with them and actually do homeschooling, because it's reached a point where going to school doesn't feel safe--at all.

I am exhausted by constantly fearing a school shooter while I'm at work each day.

I honestly don't know how you do it. I admire your devotion to your students. I have several friends who retired early as things are getting so bad at schools. I am just so sorry.

I just read another post about the same incident posted by Carol. No place seems safe in this crazy unpredictable world. . It's a nightmare for any parent. I would not feel safe as a parent. Keeping fingers crossed that children are safe.

@MarieCoyle I think that's how most of us feel.. We live in unsafe and vulnerable times. There is craziness everywhere

@arunima25 It's amazing to me that it ever got this far. Or this bad. Crazy is right, and so, so tragic.

Carol and I posted about it at the exact same time, we both must have been watching the news. I don't feel safe for my grandchildren, or for any children, or even anyone at this point.

@wolfgirl569 I do understand that. But knowing that it just keeps happening makes me think that we are just sending our lambs to slaughter. Sorry to be so graphic, it's just the way it is.

And it just shouldn't be so accepted as the normal thing to happen. I just don't feel it's safe to even send the kids to school now, but of course I don't have an alternative either.

I'm glad that I don't have any grandchildren to worry about. I am horrified to read that the shooter here was a young woman. Well, she did use he/him pronouns so she was trans.

I am just horrified that there was a shooter at all. These shootings are so terrible and tragic, I just don't have words. And the suffering they cause...there is nothing sadder than to have to bury your child. They did just say the shooter was not as young as they thought, she was 28. Still a young woman.

My thoughts are with the families, not the politics right now. So many have no answers right now. I would definitely homeschool my child to protect him/her from the drag queen shows and all the other madness they are teaching.

It's just so unbelievable that this even happens anywhere at all, and even more insane to know it happens all the time. I don't know how much more people can take, and I sure don't know how teachers manage it all.

@MarieCoyle It is all so senseless for sure. This school is in a very nice area of Nashville, I don't know the details of the shooter yet, just that the cops shot him. I worry about the parents as well. Teachers need a way to stay safe.

@CarolDM I know the teachers are in danger as well. Some people think private schools like this one are safer. I don't think that any of them are safe.

@JimBo452020 I've already reached that point. I lost loved ones to Covid. Now I worry about losing more to violence. I do know worrying does absolutely no good at all, but my mind will not turn off.

This must've been recent, because it's like the fourth discussion I've read on this shooting today. What a world we live in.

@MarieCoyle Do you know what scares me the most? I remember a movie from the Omen movie series, When finally things got really bad for the country the Devil in the guise of a man became President, You know what I mean?

The US does have an epidemic of school shootings that has gone on now for years. But truthfully, right now it seems as if the entire planet is seething with violence.

It is sad. There's a lot to be said about homeschooling. It's not strictly in your home. Homeschool groups get together for gym and other social activities so they can be around friends.

@just4him Plus, it gives the kids a chance to be around a few other kids, which they need to do.

This problem should be tackled at all levels so that the loopholes are sealed tight. Obviously, things are out of control. And to think innocent lives are at stake.

We need to start addressing WHY these kids are shooters. There is definitely a breakdown in awareness somewhere in their lives by their parents, etc.
