Earlier in the countdown I said there were two show-stoppers in the top ten list of favorite songs featured in movies. Charles Durning’s splendid performance of “The Sidestep” was one. Welcome to the other. There are show stealing scenes, and then there’s this one. #4: Think - Aretha Franklin If you’ve never seen The Blues Brothers JJ (who got that hard-to-shake moniker from this movie: Joliet Jake) would ask what’s wrong with you. So would my putting coach. But if you haven’t I can assure you that you could watch this scene alone and be satisfied. The Queen of Soul takes five minutes and owns this film as Matt “Guitar” Murphy’s wife and owner of a soul food diner. She tries to dissuade Murphy from rejoining the Blues Brothers’ band (“They still owe you money, fool!”) by singing her classic song “Think.” There are tons of great performances in this movie, which is one of the things that makes it the classic that it is, but ‘Retha owned it lock, stock, and barrel. Think Written by Aretha Franklin and Ted White Recorded by Aretha Franklin From The Blues Brothers, 1980 Be careful you don’t lose yours:

She earned her regal sobriquet, to paraphrase Warren Zevon.

@LindaOHio — “the use of unnecessary violence in the appreciation of the Blues Brothers has been approved.”

@FourWalls Hubs and I are fascinated with the cop chase. They must have wrecked a LOT of cars.

It’s a great music movie, even if you don’t like the comedy elements of it.

@evilamericans — I’m wondering myself. She’s a Jimmy Buffett fan and didn’t know half the songs I used in my Buffett countdown!

I tend to think it’s one of Aretha’s best tunes (along with “Chain of Fools”).
