Table setting

I doubt if anyone sets their table the way one sees in the photo. It is unimaginable that there were times when tables were set in the manner that you see in the photo. In those good old days there were a retinue of maids to take care of that And today most have no maids and in that scenario I would not be surprised if food is served off the gas range I am sure there will be dinner sets and cutlery languishing in cupboard and never brought out even if there are guests. What's your style? Image Credit:

I do set an informal, but normal setting for around here. On the odd occasion we actually eat at the table, that is. When it's just Dale and I, we eat while we watch TV.

Dining table is an all purpose table here (lol) We have a buffet table from where food, cutlery and crockery is picked up, even when guests are around

@1creekgirl We have an open concept. The dining portion of hall leads to the buffet/kitchen area. We have no doors.

@allknowing I think a buffet style of eating is good.

The way in the photo is not even correct according to the etiquette... too many things on the table. I am formal when I have guests or we have a celebration.

We used to set the table but now it is buffet style We have a buffet table and guests help themselves. Most guests are family and friends but when someone from the office turned up it was a different story and that is when we were living in the city

@allknowing I set the table when I have guests and I serve them. I hope to have guests again soon, as soon as my husband feels better and we can stop going to the hospital for tests.

When I first bought my dining table (the first time I'd ever had the space to have a dining area), I was determined to eat meals at it. We mostly did so - evening meals with my two sons or any other time we'd be eating together. It stopped being a regular thing, I think, once the pandemic started and I worked from home. Now my dining table is my work table and I'm too lazy to clear it up each evening and set up for work again each morning Saying that, we will still sit at the table if I have time off and it's worth me clearing my work stuff away! As for setting the table, I don't think that's something I've ever really done. I just serve dinner and bring out cutlery at the same time. I'm not sure I'd know what all the other things are for!

Even ours is a work table It is so placed that we can watch tv have a check on the kitchen and next to it is the table with the computer. We used to eat in style but not any more

@allknowing Mine is deliberately placed so that we can't watch TV while sitting at the table! I wouldn't say we've ever eaten in style, though!

No table setting where I'm from. It is the usual plates and cutlery. Nothing fancy like the one in the photo.

A spoon and fork, and a single plate each are enough for me and my guests, and sometimes a small spoon and saucer for dessert. I see such table settings once in a while in movies of ultra-rich families. Even rich families nowadays do away with such.

The English before they left introduced these bizarre table settings for us. It is well nigh impossible to set a table such as the one you see in the photo. Same here - fork and spoon, soup spoon and a dessert spoon. Food. cutlery and crockery is taken from the buffet table The dining table is not set (lol)

It sure does look pretty but no way this would be way to many things to wash after the meal was done

I just give everyone what they need and they fix their own plates after the food is done.

Even the guests have dwindled over time. People prefer to meet outside for a chat compared to when visiting each other's home was de jure. Now we are only two and cutlery sets are sitting idle in cupboards. Meals are mostly basic too.

Same here. We have a buffet table that serves the purpose. Food, cutlery and crockery is picked from there Not much entertaining either. Cupboards are loaded.

I have seen this when I go to the hotel and in my friend's faculty since her faculty is business, economics and accountancy faculty, and one of the course offered there is hotel business management. So yup, I have seen this and understand the meaning of that placing. My style usually put the utensils upside down after eating; at home or outside.

@allknowing Oh, that's another thing. Before eating, I always ask for hot water to sterilise the utensils, especially when I eat outside.
