Okay, asterisk. Today’s song obviously wasn’t recorded in 1963, but it was released as a single in 1963. So it’s included on this list of songs that were released sixty years ago. So don’t split hairs, just enjoy! Brown Eyed Handsome Man - Buddy Holly As is the case with lots of artists who see their career tragically cut short, there were a lot of posthumous releases of Buddy Holly’s music. In this case, the 1963 album Reminiscing featured the Fireballs (later of “Sugar Shack” and “Bottle of Wine” fame) doing overdubbing of the original recordings, which in some cases were just demos. (That became a very popular thing after Jim Reeves’ death: I have to be careful to make sure I don’t have an overdubbed song on my playlist, because in many cases they were laden with strings and background vocals that drown out the majesty of Reeves’ voice.) If you go back and listen to the original recordings (which came out in the early 90s) you’ll find nothing wrong with them. But it made money for the record label. Brown Eyed Handsome Man Written by Chuck Berry Recorded by Buddy Holly From Reminiscing, 1963 A whole lot of good women shedding tears:

The first version I heard was by Waylon Jennings, believe it or not. Ah, the joys of growing up on country music.

@FourWalls after I left my teenage years I gradually switched to country music and then became a bona fide country music lover. Unfortunately I was subjected to the music of the 80s when my kids were growing up and blasting it from their rooms

My Dad was a huge Chuck Berry fan. He played his style of guitar often.

As Bob Seger said, “All of Chuck’s children are out there playing his licks.” Truer words were never sung.
