It’s Holy Wednesday here and the mood is kinda different. My neighbor is playing some worship songs now which adds to the solemn feeling.
Tomorrow, Holy Thursday, I am going to close my shop because we are planning to do Visita Iglesia or visit seven churches. I’ve actually never done that before but my mom is adamant. We won’t bring the kids because they might just get bored. And I asked my sister to map out the seven churches in the city we are going to visit so that we won’t be going round and round in circles.
Then on Good Friday, my MIL is going to cook this local Holy Week dish called binignit which has taro, sweet potatoes, sago pearls, landang and plantains (sometimes with jackfruit meat and sticky rice) cooked in coconut milk.
That’s why that in the picture above is very expensive now because everyone is cooking coconut based dishes. We are supposed to be fasting so no meat for us. I’ll post a binignit picture maybe.
By the way, is it correct to say ‘Happy Holy Week’?

Uhm... what if you get bored before you get through the seven churches? Are you allowed to stop and go home?
As for the round, brown balls.... would you believe me if I told you they're rabbit poop?

You could just go to @MrDenata's shop and buy coconut milk from him.
He's been lazy and should work more.

@sol_cee
Ahh.... Yeah, I did a lot of things just because mom was mom. I totally understand. I hope you find things to enjoy while you're with her.
Angel still had time to come to myLot and post a discussion, so he's not THAT busy.

@DaddyEvil you're a genius! It's not red anymore! loll
I haven't been to church since my brother's wedding last December!
But my mother is a staunch Catholic and she doesn't ask me a lot of favors so when she asked me if I have plans for tomorrow, you know the rest.. lol
And @MrDenata is probably drowning in coconut orders in his shop now

It dates back to our ancestors' life in the past as we Catholics are 'not allowed' to eat full meals during Holy Week so they just cooked whatever stuff they had around and coconuts were in abundance plus some root crops and other veggies. And until now, we still cook those dishes during this time of the year.
What food do you have during Holy Week there?

@allknowing we can't eat meat so we have to go to fish and this time of the year, the price of fish here is always crazy expensive

There is no law saying you can't say Happy Holy Week BUT it isn't the most appropriate thing to say either. Holy week is observed with special reverence, solemnity and devotion for the passion of Christ. If you want to wish someone a well spent Holy Week, you could perhaps say Have a blessed Holy week instead and reserve that happy word of greeting for Easter Sunday because that's the occasion for rejoicing.
Those are coconuts, fully mature coconuts that you extract to get coconut milk.

I can guess you may be from the Ilocos region? I heard binignit somewhere in the region through my husband.
I used to visit churches when I was younger, but now, I may faint and be easily fatigued if I do it now. The neighborhood chapels and church are also having rituals such as, stations of the cross, penitential rites, etc. and the overnight prayers are on in the chapels.
I know those in the image, those are fully-husked coconuts!

Actually I’m from Davao and we’ve been calling it binignit ever since. But recently there’s a debate going whether it’s spelled as benignet? Benignit? Binegnet?
My mother, she’s 67 by the way, called me just now to confirm our Visita Iglesia later. Excited much?
Yes they’re hairy bowling balls of a coconut

That sounds like quite a dish to prepare. Say what you feel with a smile.

@sol_cee That's the problem with special dishes. Does it always taste the same?

I don't know if it is correct to say that but I think it is okay.
I remember when I was still in my elementary years, my mother was very active in church and we used to do Visita Iglesia with other parishioners. I remember we did it during Maundy Thursday and Good Friday.
The last time we joined was in 2014.
