Neat, trimmed and looking beautiful

We are on holiday in Ireland and we’re seeing so many beautifully trimmed hedges and shrubs. While we have them in Australia, we don’t have as many but here they are everywhere. Around the fields, the hedges are often straggly and unkempt but on roads leading to houses are trimmed to within an inch of their lives. The shrubs are trim and neat too. These two were in the yard of a convent where we visited a friend. She was very keen for us to meet her two dogs – one at a time as they tend to fight – and I’ll write about them later.

I don't know Grimace of McDonalds. What is that? A film perhaps?

Yes quite neat and trimmed! I remember a movie which was perhaps set in a similar backdrop and had a maze of such Shrubs. If I correctly recall its name was Avengers and had Sean Connery as the villain.

@JudyEv Well got the details. It was a 1998 movie also starring Ralph Fiennes and Uma Thurman.

I haven't seen the film. Sean Connery hasn't made a bad film. At least, I don't think he has.

@RubyHawk I think they drop a wire 'cone' over them and clip off what pokes through.

They look nice when they are trimmed. Else they look untidy, I don't like them. Nice Picture Eager to know about the two dogs. Seems like some sort of sibling rivalry or petling rivalry

I'm sure the shrubs can get quite scruffy at times. I will try to write about the dogs soon.

@arunima25 I have photos but in fairness I need to blank out our friend's face. I will try to do it soon but I might do a 'quick and easy' discussion first.

I much prefer trees and shrubs to look like real trees and shrubs rather than plastic imitations.

Fair enough. This is their usual shape though apart from some tidying up.

That's a lot of work to keep a hedge looking that pristine. There are some in the suburbs of El Paso but here in the outskirts there aren't any at all.

Yes they are, I remember back in 1960 when mom had 2 and tried to keep them looking neat, she finally just removed them.

Those trees look so nice. I have seen similarly trimmed trees from photos my late husband took when he went to Australia. You do know Australia don't you? I though perhaps you are having such a good time you might have forgotten where home is Those trimmed trees were just outside of Sydney they are slightly different but also nicely shaped,

Haha - no, I haven't forgotten where home is! Some of the people in our village have smaller versions trimmed in different shapes.

Something like that needs trimming at least a couple of times a year. I don't know how people manage when they have a lot!

I would have thought more often for some reason. I think in Thailand they used to drop a wire cone over them and clip whatever poked through although I can't really see that working very well. Surely the twigs would just get pushed to the sides.

I used to live in a house with four square (trimmed) bushes in the front of the house. Guess who did the trimming? Moi! (I did the task so well when I was still single for years - but the moment I got married, my husband now ex, decided to chop them off because he felt embarrassed letting me do the task, and he simply hated doing it! I was relieved in a sense!)
