In countries where there is severe winter everything freezes including the rivers. My Indian friend who was on an assignment in Russia wrote to me about her adventure walking on a frozen river. It is not safe to do so as there could be thin ice and anyone can drown But this friend had the guts and she did it. She did it often as she said she reached her destination much faster. Have you and would you walk on a frozen river? Image credit:

People do a lot of ice fishing around here. I've been ice fishing. That is mainly on lakes. I see ski doo tracks on rivers, so people fo go on them. Some rivers aren't very deep I guess.

@allknowing Once the ice is thick enough, it is safe. People keep ice fishing huts on the lake all winter. They have stoves in them to keep warm. Rivers that are crossed by ferries in the summer have ice bridges in the winter. I think the ice bridges get flooded with more water to make them stronger. We skate on the lake in the winter also.

@allknowing Fear of falling into the icy river prevents me from even thinking of walking on an icy river.

It isn’t safe to do that with frozen rivers in my state (Oklahoma). It never freezes deep enough to be able to walk across frozen water. In Canada though, wow! I bet they can do it all winter!

My nephew stays in Fort Collins and when I went there the weather was no different from what I have here. It was the month of September. So never got to see any frozen water bodies They have a lake touching their property

I have walked on iced over bays, but not on a river. If it wasn't safe, why did she do it? It sounds very foolish.

It's risky , I never think of doing it. Your friend was taking risk of her life by doing so.

@allknowing - There were local guides who knew where it was safe to walk. A river is different as the water under the ice continues to flow.

No I would be afraid that I would fall in the cold water and than I would not be able to get out. She is braver than me.
