Sherman Marched Here

One of the last big battlefields of the Civl War is also one of the last big battlefields I had yet to visit. I saw the sign to Kennesaw Mountain National Battlefield when I was coming home from Florida, but it was cold and raining then. That was no issue this time around.
Wow, is that battlefield big. Not as large as Gettysburg, but still pretty darn big. And it was a pretty darn costly battle.
General Sherman (in the photo, along with an appropriate quote of his found in the museum at the welcome center) knew that capturing Atlanta would more or less destroy what was left of the Confederacy, given the city was a major hub for manufacturing. After Chattanooga and Chickamauga fell, Sherman kept marching into Georgia, flanking the Confederate armies.
As they had done in Chattanooga, the Rebels retreated to a mountain. This time, it was the 1,800-foot tall Kennesaw Mountain, which is on the outskirts of Atlanta.
The fortification made Sherman realize he could only do a full-frontal assault, which was going to cost lives. And he did. And it did. The death toll was 3:1 (3,000 Union deaths to 1,000 Confederates), and the Yanks couldn’t move that fortress.
But something happened that’s still not really explicable. Although they won the battle — handily — the Confederate army sneaked out of the fortress in the middle of the night, leaving Sherman’s men to take the area and continue to Atlanta.
There are movies (one of the better National Park Service explanation films) that explain this in the museum, along with a detailed timeline of the battle itself (as well as the events before and after it).
I’m so glad I got to add this battlefield to my list of Civil War history lessons!
Here’s the video that plays at the welcome center theater:

As long as someone thinks they’re better than someone else it’ll keep happening.

I’ve been to Gettysburg twice as well and still haven’t seen half of it.

We’re a bunch of warmongers. We’ve been at war with ourselves since the 1850s, and it’s still going on today. Just not as organized or consistent to call it a “war.”

@FourWalls Too many around the world are warmongers, they do not even think that it's possible to discuss, their option is only to fight.

I think what may have happened, because the Union army was dug in out of the line of sight from the top of the mountain, is that the Confederates may have thought the Yanks were gone. The more plausible explanation is they were ordered to reinforce the defenses in Atlanta.

It’s such a terrible part of our history but it needs to be remembered so we don’t repeat the mistakes.

I really wish they focused more on the Civil War in school. Maybe they do, I don’t know. However, I remember Kobe Bryant talking about the year the movie “Lincoln” came out. He took all of his then Lakers teammates to see it, and to his consternation, most of his young teammates were surprised at the ending!
How is that possible?!

This generation is ego-centric. Not that we all aren’t, but the notion that “nothing happened before I was born” seems to be alive and well with the younger set.
Another likely reason is that, generally, history teachers are boring. I had a great European history professor in college, and I remember so much from that class.

Watching some of the mindsets in today’s landscape m I fear we didn’t learn a thing.

One of the very worst things that could happen especially when a country divides into two sides fighting against each other. I know and have heard stories that many of the spirits of these soldiers can still be seen where they were killed,

I fear that we’re teetering on a division again.

I'm glad you were able to stop this time. I wish man would learn some lessons after battles such as this; but alas, it won't ever happen. Hope you are having a good Monday. Are you home safe and sound now?

I am home, safe and sound. I’ll write more about that later.
That battlefield takes a day and a half to see everything (as opposed to Gettysburg, which takes 2-3 days because a lot of the fighting was out in the town as well).
