Do you know what "halo-halo" is?

I would like to introduce you to one of our favorite Pinoy desserts/snacks this hot summer season in our country. It's called "halo-halo", translated literally to "mix-mix". It's made up of shaved ice, with various fruits such as jackfruit, apple, banana, beans, and toppings like ice cream or leche flan (milk custard or creme caramel). This mix wouldn't be complete without milk and sugar. The fruits vary and some people add coconut slices (nata de coco) too. It's satisfying and makes one full, so it's good for dessert or snacks. We often prepare this at home for ourselves because it's easy to. Have you ever tasted this Pinoy dessert? If you did, how did it taste? Image of halo-halo above is mine.

I know what it is because in the past other users from your country described this dessert. I have not tried halo-halo, that is sold in Milan in the area where 45,000 Filipino live.

@LadyDuck I guess it could be sweet for you, but you could also omit the sugar ingredient if you want, and also the sweet fruits. But most fruits contain sugar (fructose)m which is easier to digest than the sugar (glucose) coming from carbohydrates such as rice, pasta, and potatoes. This is because the glycemic index of fruit sugar (sucrose) is lower than that of the glucose in carbohydrates. Although fruits are sweeter than rice, rice is much more dangerous to a diabetic person because of its higher glycemic index..

@Jenaisle There are ingredients that I like and others that I dislike, but I fear it's far too sweet for me.

@Jenaisle. I could try to make something like it but without the added sugar. I could use bananas or other sweet fruits and maybe add some raisins.
