What does Nothing Look Like?

When I was in school, we often discussed scientific and religious subjects. One of the favorites was that before the Big Bang, there was nothing. We wondered what nothing looked like. I discovered that they now say there was heat and a point of singularity that expanded, caused the bang, and the universe is still expanding. I don't remember that from long ago. What does nothing look like to you?

Black is a color, so nothing should be colorless and transparent. Nothing means the absence of anything that could emit any sort of light light.

@akalinus - I have been in very dark places, but if you adjust your eyes, after a while you can still see things.

@LadyDuck This is true. I could find things in the dark when I was a kid in places with no electric.

That is a good way of explaining it. I remember living in the country far away from any light except the sun and stars, etc., and whatever light we had, be it candles or a lantern. But, the blackest night still contains things under and in it.

@akalinus It's a question nobody has the answer of.Our Hindu philosophy asserts that the universe came into existence with a sound _ OM.Perhaps the big bang theory accepts something similar.

I think the Christian Bible (Hebrews 7:3 and Psalm 33:9) says that God spoke it into existence. Perhaps that is the same sound mentioned in the Hindu philosophy.

@Shivram59 So is the sound the voice of God when he spoke the universe into being? Let there be light.

@akalinus Might be.In ths Veda a sound is known as "Shabd." "OM" is considered "Shabdbrahm" which means the God in ths form of a shabd or sound.OM is "anshat Nad"*which means the unstriking sound.Om is the Name of God.

Hard to say what nothing looks like, as you're not supposed to see nothing.

I think maybe the human mind is not equipped to handle the concept of nothingness.

I used to spend a lot of time wondering what nothing looked like. A point of singularity is still something.

That is a good question since I would imagine before the big bang happened the universe would be very dark.

I think you are right because the sun and stars had not been formed yet.

@akalinus I have seen cities that are dark when there was no light due to a natural disaster.

@Deepizzaguy I have seen that also. That kind of dark is very, very dark.

I have never thought about it, it is difficult to imagine.

It is hard to imagine. How much sleep did I lose contemplating the state of the universe or the absence of it?

@nela13 I still think about it sometimes. That is why I posted this discussion. Do you think it could explain my headaches? Hm.

I was thinking about exactly the same thing and was going to write a Discussion about it. It makes my head hurt to think about it.

Maybe that explains my headaches, So you thought of writing a discussion on the same thing? All I can say is that great minds think alike.

I see what you mean. If the universe is a big ball shape, what lies beyond that? It is nothing but what does it look like. It is easier to visualize because it surrounds something, the universe. I don't know, I have a lot of trouble thinking about this.

@akalinus Exactly. My Discussion was going to be about how the universe is curved. What is beyond that curve? Nothing. I can't wrap my mind around what nothing is. What is outside of that curve?

It may mean the universe was black then and one cannot see anything except darkness and "nothing" could be perceived..

I can imagine what it would look like if the world or the galaxy or the Milky Way weren't there. I just have a problem with the concept of nothing. I can't imagine what it would look like if space was gone. Even a point of singularity is something but where did it come from?

Scientists didn't say there was heat and a singularity point that expanded long ago because they still aren't sure they're right about that. And they had no clue back in the day. Were you aware that "something" is pulling everything in one direction in our universe? Some things are being pulled faster than others. I was watching a YT video about that a few days ago... It's interesting.

@akalinus Sorry, hon. If I could explain it better for you, I would try. The prevailing thoughts are that something massive outside our universe is pulling everything here in one direction. (Even if some stars are receding from us in the opposite direction, they're still also being pulled to whatever is pulling everything else.)

@DaddyEvil I like to think if anything is pulling the universe, it is God making room for something else. Laugh if you want, I'm sure everyone else will.

That is very interesting DE. I'm not sure I understand that but I know who is pulling the universe.

How can the universe expand if it's already infinite. Space science is like talking to a brick wall. Never can figure it out. Too far out of the real physical realm of things. Big bang sounds just like the Bible. When God said let there be light. Bang , there was light.

Unless I looked at things the wrong way, the universe is still expanding. Yes, God made light.
