It took the sky about 15 minutes to turn from the darkest black to resplendent blue this morning - I was watching. First it went a bit grey then turned milky, but there were no clouds. Things speeded up a bit and an apricot tinge appeared above the Castlereagh hills and deepened and spread out in all directions like a drop of blood dropped into water or onto gauze. In no time we had a full blaze of red as clouds started to appear and catch the colour that the sun was sending ahead of itself to herald its approach. Then wow, it arrived. Birds trumpeted a fanfare as the great majesty of the skies rose above the hills and blessed us. Purple hills, turquoise sea, periwinkle sky, smaragdine fields. I don’t know what colour I turned - probably puce. Then it all died down and I went to brew some coffee.

@fleura Smaragdine is a fine word indeed. I've yet to use it in conversation.

What a wonderful way to describe the changes of the colour of the sky from night to dawn. You are lucky to enjoy such a beautiful sight.

I used to enjoy having the opportunity to see both the sunrise and the sunset from the windows in my house in Latvia, The red blaze in the morning was always a thrill to see. One of my photos from that time,
