Do you believe in this concept?

One of our inspirational speakers in the country is Bo Sanchez. He said: "Life is a mirror. What you see in others is a reflection of what you see in yourself." ~Bo Sanchez. Of course, there are always exceptions to the rule, but this statement of Brother Bo has left an imprint in my heart. Unless we have a firsthand experience to the contrary, I believe that how we perceive others is based on our own perception of ourselves and of things around us. So, if we were brought up with love, we almost always see the good in people, and vice-versa. What are your thoughts on this? Do you think there is truth in his statement?

No, I do not see truth in this sentence. I grew up in a wonderful family and I had love from my parents. It is true that, by nature, humans are inclined to judge the others.May be that those with a good soul are inclined to give a better judgment. But I disagree that what we see is a reflection of what we see in ourselves.

I see. I'm glad you grew up in a wonderful family. Yes, those with a good soul tend to give better judgment. Perhaps, the speaker meant that we usually expect others to do what we do ourselves. It's like the "thieves could know their own kind" sort of thing.

@LadyDuck I got your point, One can spot people by the way they act and behave, thanks for your point of view. It opened my mind to new interpretations of the statement.

@Jenaisle - I can spot aggressive hateful people at first sight, even I know for sure that I am not aggressive.

I definitely believe there is truth in that statement. I know one person who accused someone once of doing something in particular for an unsavory motive. I thought, that’s ridiculous! Why would they think that’s the reason that person did that? Then I realized, they assumed that person had a bad motive because that would have been their own motive in that situation! We see in others what we see in ourselves, and that should either reassure us, or scare us.

Yes, if we haven't done it, we wouldn't expect someone to do it, especially if it's the first time them. We tend to assume what others would do based on what we would do in that situation. I understand what you're trying to impart.

No. I don`t believe in that statement. It is more of what we believe in what we see base on our experiences and influences around us. Therefore, you really can`t tell it is base in you

No, I don't agree. If someone is bad, that does not mean that I am bad as well or that I see good in that bad person.

I do think that things we like and or don't like in people are qualities we have ourselves, or think that we do. If there are things you don't like about someone it might be things you don't like in yourself and that person reminds you of them. Or qualities we like are those we also possess.

Right, if we haven't done it ourselves, we would find it hard to believe other people would have done it too.

This could be an exception to the rule? We could also interpret the statement based on our own perception of its meaning.

I think that it means that we tend to project out from ourselves, some of our traits, onto others. If we are a very greedy person, we might notice that someone else is very greedy, but not be aware of the tendency in ourselves. If we accuse someone else of such greed then, we should also, try to check our own selves to see if we are greedy in any way too. I have heard it said that when we point a, (one finger) finger at someone, three other fingers are pointing back at ourselves. We are all similar in a way, and when we name-call, the name sticks to us too. If we are good people, we will usually see the good in others too. In this case, this is more, our being kindly, caring people, rather than our seeing a mirror of ourselves, in others. Not everything is mirrored, as the sender is always greater than the mirror, more real than any projected image.

Oh, how clearly you have explained it. I think this is truly what he meant by that statement. Thank you for clarifying the meaning for me and others. I like your last sentence about this, "when we point a, (one finger) finger at someone, three other fingers are pointing back at ourselves." It's like Jesus saying: "Let the first person without sin throw the first stone." And no one did.

@Jenaisle Yes, Jesus could see the character, and heart, of another person. He never used that against anyone though, but more tried to be a friend to them, and lift them up, rather than pull them down any further.
