Paying too much for TV and Internet

We used to have Verizon FIOS for our TV, Internet, and DVR before but then when their promo ended we ended up switching to Spectrum as they gave us a promotional rate.
But just like FIOS the promo has ended and now we are paying somewhere in the $270-$280 for our monthly bill. That is a ridiculous amount of money to spend every month.
I want to cancel Spectrum but have no idea who to switch to. I want to be able to watch live TV but also record shows to watch later. And I need to have Internet too. Any suggestions?
I don't want to go back to FIOS as the promotional rate they will give won't last long.

I have found that threatening to quit doesn't work anymore. They couldn't give me a lower rate. They just don't care. They're all too expensive.

Sometimes they have promos but I guess those are for new customers only. Seems many people have Roku but from what I understand you then need to install and subscribe to different streaming apps in order to watch TV stuff, no? There is YouTube but a lot of stuff isn't on YouTube, at least not on just regular YouTube.

@LindaOHio that’s ip streaming. What my mom has. Her spectrum promo rate for ip streaming, internet, and phone is $89.99. Maybe that’s cause I switched from Time Warner services to spectrum ones. We’ve had an account with them for years before they became spectrum.

@lovebuglena They said we could save by going through the Spectrum app on Roku and using the cloud DVR. My husband would not want to mess with all of that. We'll stay where we are. DISH has a 3-year guaranteed price freeze. It's tempting.

Some ISPs will offer you a lower rate if you don't switch away from them. Call their billing department and see if they'll offer you a lower rate. If they don't, then call Verizon and tell their billing department that the rate is too high and ask if they'll give you a "courtesy" deal.

@lovebuglena I see... Have you checked to see if you can get some of those shows for free on YT... You may have to wait for them to become available but YT is normally free. I don't NEED to watch a show as soon as it's available. In a week or a month is fine with me.

One thing we can do is try to downgrade our cable from Gold to Silver. Thing is some of the channels we watch are on the Gold package.

With Cox cable, I ask to speak to someone to cancel my cable. They connect me, and then those people offer me the best current discounts which usually gets my bill down $30 to $40. Not a huge savings, but you might try that method with Spectrum.

@lovebuglena Just make sure you talk to the people who handle cancellations. If they’re like Cox they’ll have you start out talking to reps who don’t have the authority to give you a discount. If, once you talk to the cancel reps, and you can’t get it lowered, but aren’t sure you want to cancel it, you can just tell them maybe you should think about it a little more to get out of actually having to cancel. Does Spectrum have a national AND local number? If they do, try the people handling the local number first. I hope it works for you. I’ve been doing it for about 16 years, and recently started helping my dad do it to get his bill down.

I wonder if trying that will work.

Cut it down to just the internet, and subscribe to a service like Apple TV, Youtube tv, sling and so on if you have a smart tv.

The account my mom had was still from Time Warner, even though Time Warner is now Spectrum. Some months ago, I called to cancel everything (she had TV, Internet, and phone) but the Internet as the bill was very high. The lady told me that there is a Spectrum promo and that for $10 more than I'd be paying just for Internet I'd get TV, Internet, and phone. I ended up getting that. Of course, the lady never told me that my mom will no longer be watching TV via cable box and that instead it is IP streaming. Now instead of about $230 she is paying $89.99. Of course, that won't last for more than a year I think.

I have a feeling that just leaving Spectrum Internet will be expensive too. It's probably gonna be over $80 just for Internet alone.

@lovebuglena No. You can downgrade if you want from your current speed, and pay around 30 for it.

My entertainment comes from DVDs, videos, and YouTube I cannot afford anything like that. I hope you find a better service,

I guess one thing that can be done is to subscribe to different streaming services. Perhaps that will lower the monthly cost. However, I want to be able to watch live TV and watch shows without waiting for a long time for them to be available.

@Butterfingers streaming services are not expensive as far as I know. Even if you get many it still will be cheaper.

Linda also has Spectrum and hers is too high as well and there is nothing they can do to lower it. That is crazy.

we killed cable and stream what we need to watch, it works great now that we have high speed internet. up until about 3 months ago we had DSL because that was what was available in our area. when they brought new internet to the area, we canceled the cable and used the savings to pay for the new but more expensive internet. what was crazy, was my on who lives about 3 miles away paid less for better, faster internet. it mad me so mad. MIne was $80 for crabby DSL with a data cap.

That is not a bad idea but then you have to subscribe to streaming services as far as I understand.

I am not sure if this is offered where you live, but you can check out a company called HughesNet. I believe they only go through Satelite Dish though.
