I am not aware if this was in vogue during your childhood but anyone who wore any new dress that person would get pinches from those around her.
I am just wondering if anyone notices when anyone wears new clothes these days There is so much that every one owns be it clothes, shoes, whatever there is no joy in owning any of those. I think it is just momentary - no one talks about it.
Would you like to go back to those days when little things mattered?

It's only an Indian tradition Eva. An interesting one if you want to know more
A database of folklore performances Menu Skip to content Main Body: Informant: So let me tell you about “New Pinch.” All the children, like all of the children in India, when we grew up, any time you wear – wear new clothes, your friends or family or anybo

@allknowing - I am sure we did not have this tradition. I know that in Ireland you get pinched on St. Patrick's Day for not wearing green because green makes you invisible to leprechauns.

I did not know pinching if one did not wear anything in green on St Patrick's Day
Yes. No one notices when someone wears something new these days

We didn't pinch for new clothes, but I remember for a while there was a thing about stepping on someone's new shoes
. If I am around someone a lot, I probably would notice new items . . . but otherwise yah, no one really seems to care.

if you long for those days, embrace the opportunity to find joy in the small moments and create your own traditions that bring back that sense of excitement and appreciation. Who knows, maybe others will join in and rediscover the delight in the little things too!

Well, usually I remember hearing that saying. But no one tried to pinch me..it would have been the last thing they did with their hand..I would have been mailing their hand back to them.

The fact that someone noticed you would more than feel that pinch.

These little traditions are funny aren't they?
I have never heard of that one but here on the first day of the month whoever remembers first can give other people 'A pinch and a punch for the first of the month' and if they remember to add 'and no returns' quickly enough they can't be pinched back. This was also in vogue in my mother's childhood (1920s/30s) but another that she experienced that has now fallen out of favour is that if someone had a birthday, others would pull their hair - one tug for each year.
