Short Story: Contentment comes from wisdomed living, gained from thoughtful contemplation on truths, and non-truths, too.

Rock with the world, not against it

The old Zen master, Larzo Zershoski, had been collecting various sayings of the other Zen masters around him, and he had written them all down in a notebook. From time to time, he would look at one, or more of these sayings, and contemplate over the truth, or the non-truth, of what had been said there. One such saying was this one: “When you look at the world, and feel that nothing is lacking from it, you feel contented then with your life.” He sat down outside on his thinking rock, and he started to chew this idea over in his mind. “The World is small in its way, and so there is always something missing from it. Contentment does not come from the World,” He thought to himself. “We do not exist to complete the world with our presence. We exist to empty ourselves of the World. Both ourself, and the world, are already complete.” “We must bring love to the world, and then let love supply us with itself from the World too. Love exists both in, and without us, and our life mission is to live both forms of love seamlessly, without denying either, or diminishing one for the other too. Never think that you live just for yourself, as each of us must live for the greater good of all too.” “Contentment is not a form of wealth, as it has no worldly value, but lives in a heart of humble harmony.” “To be content is to be happy in that contentment, not second-guessing of it.” And so, the old master closed his book, after adding these ideas of his own to the quote. Whenever he wrote a new quote, or saying in his book, he would always write it on a new page, to give him space on that page to add his own thoughts, as he had now done here. Contentment warms one’s soul, as it had done for the master here again too. These are all true and contentment makes one happy. If one is contented with his/her life he/she tends to be happier because he/she knows how to appreciate what he/she has. In any situation - even the supposed-to-be sad ones - there's always something that you can look for and be contented with.

@innertalks Yes, I know what you mean. It's with the heart that we can see rightly. A heart that recognizes the power of the love of God.

I was wondering if anyone would point out the contradictions there too, in my article. There is always something missing from the world, and yet the World is always complete. The World is complete, and created right, but if we ourselves are often missing from participating in it fully from our heart, by our trying to seize contentment from the world with our mind, and when we do so, we will never find it. Contentment is an indwelling attribute of our hearts, not of our minds. Yes, when we are content in our heart, we will always see something in everything to be contented with, as when we look, we see the hand of God, and of his love, fashioning every part of the World from his perfection. Anything not fitting in, is usually more us, not seeing how it does actually fit in.

What a nice observation and nice set of quotes. I am one of those who qualifies as content. I often feel excessive socializing leads to discontentment, because some competition emerges out of nowhere. I tend to have limited contacts. I enjoy listening to music and singing, and well, my chores take up most of my time. I would prefer to be lazy rather than compete...

Thanks. I am sort of content in not being content. I could never be content with the World, in the World, but at a deeper level, I am content within myself. It seems like that you are the same, content within yourself, but not content whenever the ugliness of competition rears its head socially, or not socially, as in sports, or politics, etc. etc.

It is said contentment also leads to a lack of initiative and action as we get smug with our lot in life. A certain level of restlessness is needed to goad us into action to punch above our weight. I tend to be easily contented as I count my blessings rather than lament about lost opportunities. The best way is to go with the flow so as not to rock the boat.

I think that contentment is the natural state of our heart, and soul. Like God, contentment, happiness, love, are who we are. Other states, exist in our mind. We try to be happy, content, or loving, with our mind, but our mind always has alternative background motives. No wonder we are restless, when we live in this state of conflict, between our mind, and our heart.

@Shiva49 l think that we can feel both contentment, and discontentment, at the same time. We always have that deeper energy of contentment in our soul, at all times. It's a sense of the gift of life, and its fulfillingness. On the other hand, our mind is rarely satisfied, and always is looking for more, without holding onto contentment, as it does so. So, we can remain content in our soul, but be discontented in our mind. It all depends which part of us is controlling us, our mind, or our soul. Our soul guides us from knowing contentment, our mind tries to influence us from discontented guesswork.

@innertalks I have an attitude to work towards contentment but challenges are part of life. How we confront them is what matters. When I look around, I find many are content despite having challenges galore. They still look forward to another day with hope. My approach is to accept the fruits of my labor though I might not have had that in mind earlier.

Yes, gratitude might lead us to that sense of contentment, if we have moved away from it, but really, when we live solely from love, we will never move away from our contentment, and gratitude, and being thankful, will always stay a part of us then too.
