It made headlines a couple of weeks ago. The tragic deaths of 20 children in a school dormitory fire in a remote town in Guyana ( my homeland). It seems the Housemother for the dormitory which houses 57 students, had secured the building for the night and was fast asleep in said building with her 5 year- old son when the fire started. Started by a 15 year old student who was upset that the housemother had confiscated her cellphone earlier. The housemother woke up confused and had trouble locating the keys. Nineteen young girls and the housemother's son died in the inferno that night. The student who started it all along with the housemother and remaining students escaped with burns - some very serious. I can't imagine what was in that girl's mind to think of doing something so wicked , because of a cellphone? - she also would have been locked in for the night. Today l heard she has been charged with murder. If found guilty what will her sentence be l wonder.. Any thoughts on this story? Pixabay image.

I can hardly believe someone would do that. Maybe she didn't anticipate the loss of life, or maybe she just didn't care.

I don't know. You light a fire when everyone is sleeping, your intentions can't be good.

A crime of the worst kind. Setting a house on fire is something I would have never dreamed of as a kid. The idea would not even come to mind especially with other kids in the house. Maybe I would be mad at the teacher and if she was unfair let her know it. But these ideas are from the internet and soon as they get mad they resort to the worst crimes. At the least life in prison.

She did start the fire, she should pay the price for the deaths of all those people.

@Kandae11 It's sad what her life will be like all because of a cell phone.

That was such a stupid and evil thing to do. It's just awful to think that someone could do this.

You wonder if someone with that mindset can even feel remorse.

@Kandae11 That's true. That girl was surely old enough to consider what the outcome might be.

She deserves the harshest punishment possible. She is old enough to grasp the consequences of her plan, and she did it anyway. I’m sure she has hope to be reformed, and I hope they would provide her therapy, because although she knew what she was doing, she obviously has mental issues too. However, she did a horrific thing because she was petulant, and didn’t get her way. I am absolutely appalled. I understand they locked them in for protection, but they should have at least had multiple alarms that would have allowed for the housemother to realize what was happening before it was too late. My heart hurts for them all!

That town where it happened is not the most sophisticated in the sense that some of the facilities are a bit outdated and not up to the standards of the larger towns. Even though the building was a sturdy structure of concrete and wood and well grilled. The students who were housed in the dormitory were from the outlying areas. That particular student l hear - and a few others were in the habit of slipping out at night - hence the locked doors. Very sad.

Must be mentally off. Why would she otherwise do this?

Sometimes it is hard to fathom what goes on in people's minds.

That's sad. That is not something to be so mad about to start a fire over.
