Tomorrow starts a new month and a new year: 1983! Meanwhile, today closes out the year 1973 and my favorite songs from that year. No shock that this is on the list, or that it’s on top of the list. It might only surprise you that it’s 50 years old now. The obvious song to top my list.
#1: Desperado - Eagles
Remember what I said yesterday about turmoil giving us great music? The Eagles recorded this in England, with Who producer Glyn Johns at the helm. It wasn’t the greatest experience. One of my favorite remarks from any Eagles interview was Don Henley saying the string session on this song had chess sets set up on chairs and seemed bored out of their skulls, saying (Texan Henley impersonating a British violinist), “I don’t feel much like a ‘desperado’.”
They weren’t happy in England, but MAN did they turn out a classic album. The analogy of a rock band being outlaws, themed with the notorious “wild bunch” Doolin-Dalton gang that formed after Bill Dalton’s brothers were killed while foolishly trying to rob two banks simultaneously, has a lot of historical accuracy in the lyrics and a lot of incredible music that has stood up very well for half a century.
You can keep Hotel California (even though my favorite Eagles song [“The Last Resort”] is on that album). I’m taking this album to a deserted island with me.
Thanks for reading.

Ah, the beginning of a great songwriting team in Frey and Henley
Desperado and Tequila Sunrise are such pleasant sing along songs to listen too! Linda had a nice cover of Desperado, of course she could sing about anything and make it her own

Oh, that’s okay. People love “Hotel California” and I could truly go the rest of my life without hearing it again and be quite content. To each his own.

This song makes me sadder than I can even explain. It reminds me of when I was at home, my childhood home back when we were all happy and close.

It’s a very sad song. The Eagles weren’t cheerful enough.

I saw the Eagles twice and Henley solo. The Eagles definitely had better harmonies but I liked the edge of Henley’s first two solo albums.

Linda was a master at most of what she did. I used to think her cover of “Tumbling Dice” was so ill-advised, but I heard it in a restaurant the other day and thought, “Hey, that’s pretty good!”

This is my favorite Eagles album. Great song.
1983 wow. I graduate high school and two weeks later was out in my own place. Looking forward to the songs you choose from that year. 73 was fantastic.

So we survived 1973! Let’s see how we do with 1983….not well, I’m thinking.

I completely agree! A beautiful ballad and a showcase of Henley’s great vocals.
