For some reason we had a German thing going in the early 80s “new wave” music scene. There was “Der Kommissar” by Falco (who was Austrian), covered by After the Fire. Peter Schilling’s “Major Tom (Coming Home)” had, as its B-side, the song in German. And then there was Nena, who had the hit with “99 Luftballons.” MTV would play both the German version and the English rendition, “99 Red Balloons.” All of that was 40 years ago now!! And, sit down kiddies, there was a time when (a) not every cable system had MTV (prompting the “I want my MTV” call that Sting sang at the beginning of Dire Straits’ “Money for Nothing”) and (b) MTV actually played music videos!!!! I’m pretty sure some of you real young people think those of us who claim that are just senile old people. Anyway, I’ve been celebrating getting older since April (when I actually got older) by looking back at songs from 60 and 50 years ago. Now it’s time to go back “just” 40 years. As you’ll see, the music was still wide open, with everything from pop to hardcore country to new wave to plain ol’ rock and roll. It was a great time for “new wave,” though, and that’ll take up quite a bit of the month’s song list. Among the things that are now 40 years old that will NOT make an appearance: Stevie Ray Vaughan’s debut Texas Flood and Michael Jackson’s Thriller. My, how time flies. As I’ve said throughout the countdowns, the purpose is more to show the “staying power” and longevity of great music than it is to make you feel old. When the month turns to June I’ll kick the “way back machine” over to 1983. Meanwhile, here’s that great Nena song (the German version) that came from 1983.

I was there, on day one, when MTV launched, when we lived in San Diego, California. I was 8-years old. I remember the MTV flag being planted on the moon, and then the Buggles came on with "Video Killed the Radio Star." I was up late. I don't remember if I was supposed to be. But I was anyway. And what a moment. What a time. It's a shame music videos are a thing of the past there. The 80s themselves were a great time. Of course, that was the bulk of my childhood, so maybe that's why I think back to it as fondly as I do. This should be a great ride. Oh. Wait. That ride is already over. This post is from 2023. Oh well. I can always scroll down.

@FourWalls This is very true, and of course, there's a reason these things are "archived."

The song 99 Red Balloons was a potent anti-US anti-USSR antiwar song, a cautionary tale about how easily the two superpowers could be triggered into launching weapons and how that would devastate a Germany still recovering from the well-deserved destruction it suffered in WWII.

Not only that, Berlin was literally the dividing line in those days.

@FourWalls Gen Z and Gen A have no idea of what the Cold War was like and probably have a hard time understanding the song. Especially American kids. You and I and a lot of others on here grew up thinking war between NATO and the Warsaw Pact was inevitable. It was just a question of when.

@DWDavis — I remember when we went on vacation in DC …I’m thinking 1969 or 1970. So I was nine or ten. And I’m looking for the black and yellow fallout shelter signs everywhere we went!!!

That was 40 years ago? GULP! I know all the songs you mentioned here. And I do remember 99 Luftballons . . . learned a bit of German that that way (thank you MTV for both versions!).

Yep, makes you feel like a kid, doesn’t it! I learned all the French I know from Lucille Starr’s “The French Song,” so I know what you’re saying.

I actually saw this on MTV which I got with my first cable subscription in 1986. There were so many kool tunes in the 1980s

@FourWalls They also said in real life they dumped the guy's body in a river and he crawled back out. What really spooks me and that is a cartoon Anastasia. Rasputin as a corpse wakes up and starts to cause trouble,

The 60s era of do whoop The 70s era of hard/soft rock The 80s era of hairbands/new wave/rock After the 80s the music changed and hasn't been as good, in my opinion.

I started getting tired of commercially popular music about 1985. That was about the time the cookie-cutter bands started appearing.

I do remember the music videos MTV used to play, but I was two for this one. I remember loving the music video countdown when I was a teenager; Mariah Carey was a frequent contributor. I haven’t liked her music maybe since I got out of my teens. Meanwhile, I predict I dream of this video tonight, and continue not to understand.
