Spring has been referred to as a season of rebirth and that is so true. Take for instance the caterpillar, who goes through a process that eventually turns it into a butterfly. Well, in a way this happens when musicians go into the studio to record a song. It's a creative process before lyrics and music becomes a finished product too. So, let's see what finished "rock-titled" tunes made my favorite playlist for this week. Comments, musings, your own favorite rock titled songs and trivia always welcome... "Rock Me Gently"- Andy Kim This veteran songwriter financed this song out of his own pocket. The artist released and distributed the tune through his own label. Kim, who had previously worked on the hit song "Sugar Sugar" by the Archie's, scored big with his gamble as "Rock Me Gently" reached #1 on the Billboard Charts in 1974. -Anyone remember this catchy song? TRIVIA CHALLENGE ***Now for our trivia music challenge for those who like to play along. See if you can guess these selections. Words in "quote marks" provide valuable clues! Name this week's tune, artist or facts: 1. "Rockin' Down the Highway" is a great tune about cruisin down the road with the car top down. A great way to spend a sunny spring day! The song was on "this band's 2nd LP," along with their smash hit "Listen to the Music." This group was one of the top bands of the 70's. When one of their founding members left due to illness, he was replaced by "Michael McDonald," which changed the band's sound from rock to more "blue-eyed" soul. -Can you name this 70's band? 2. This "60's duo" recorded this song in 1966 for the "Sound of Silence" album. The song references a "rock" and an "island" in the lyrics. The tune is about a reclusive person who locks himself away from the world and everyone. This duo got a big career boost when their song "Mrs. Robinson," which was used in the movie "The Graduate," and became a #1 hit. -Can you name this "folk-rock" duo and their rock-titled song? 3. "So You Want to Be a Rock 'n' Roll Star" was a song released in "1967" from this L.A. based band. This group's original "folk-rock sound" produced such 1965 hits as " Mr. Tambourine Man" and "Turn! Turn! Turn!". Their musical style later evolved into Psychedelic and then a country rock sound. This song poked fun at the manufactured success of the rock TV band "The Monkees." Original member "David Crosby" went on to fame with the country rock supergroup, CSN. -Do you know the name of this band? Let's be a "rock star" and figure out this music trivia. If you're stuck and need additional hints just let me know in your response. I'll be glad to supply one. Or, as Billy Swan would say, "I Can Help." Thanks for reading and responding to my music post!!! I will return with a new edition soon. Hope you can wait till then, lol. Stay tuned... Source- Wikipedia & songfacts.com

I remember the pre MM Doobies, they were pretty good but I never saw them in concert until the early 80s but by that time they'd lost their luster and MM.

Well, Scooby Doo to you! You must fight the impulse to read other's responses especially that gal whose as "solid as a rock" with her answers. The Doobies was one concert I really enjoyed seeing Complete Trivia Answers: 1. Doobie Brothers 2. Simon & Garfunkel- I Am a Rock 3. The Byrds -Michael McDonald was not only a member of the Doobie Brothers, but played with Steely Dan. He co-wrote, sang and played on many artists LP's including Kenny Loggins, Christopher Cross, Bonnie Raitt and Toto. But I liked the rockin' Doobies much more!

Rock me Gently was a cool song on the oldies channel. 1. Doobie Brothers (China Grove & Taking it to the Streets were favorites.) 2. Simon & Garfunkel (Another song always enjoyed, even today. Very relaxing to hear Sound of Silence.) 3. The Byrds (I wasn't a big fan but I remember my sister playing their music. Turn was a huge hit.)

Yes, one could classify that tune as a One-Hit Wonder song for Andy Kim. Not a big fan of The Byrds either. My favorite was their cover of Dylan's Mr. Tambourine Man. Some "Rock Steady" answers there Complete Trivia Answers: 1. Doobie Brothers 2. Simon & Garfunkel- I Am a Rock 3. The Byrds -Simon offered the song "I am a Rock" to the British duo Chad and Jeremy to record but they turned it down. For that effort you deserve a little silence...

Poor Andy Kim….there are still people who think “Rock Me Gently” is sung by Neil Diamond. 1. Reefer madness! Get off the pot when you’re talking about the devil’s weed! Didn’t they take their name from a Frank Sinatra song….”Doobie, Doobie, Do, oh Doobie Brothers.” 2. Tom and Jerry! Paul and Artie!!! But which one’s the rock and which one’s the island?! (I’d better get my books and my poetry to protect me from the tomatoes thrown at my comments. ) 3. I guess that was the era of misspelling things: the beetles couldn’t spell. The monkeys couldn’t spell. And dang if the Byrds didn’t get eight miles high and misspell their name, too! .

Ha, ha. You know Andy does resemble the look of the circa 1970's Neil Diamond (see photo). em]shocked[/em] Oh, I thought those Doobies were named after the TV show "Dobie Gillies and just spelled it wrong. I don't think Paul ever thought of Artie as "the rock" in their musical collaboration. This classic line at the Rock in Roll HOF didn't help: "I regret the ending of our friendship. I hope that some day before we die we will make peace with each other." He then paused before adding, "No rush." No tomatoes just "solid rocks!" Fun facts: -Simon offered the song "I am a Rock" to the British duo Chad and Jeremy to record but they turned it down. They must have had "rocks in their heads."

That song was catchy! #1- Another song the band did was "Jesus is Just Alright." Their name rhymes with "Scooby." And they really were not "Brothers." The duo is correct "I am" at a loss to find another clue for the song. But it ends in rock and begins with "I." Byrds were the "rock stars." Fun fact: -Terry Melcher who produced the first two Byrd's albums is the son of the actress Doris Day. Here's a little "Silence" while you figure out these helpful hints...
