As promised, I’m at the car dealership, and the car is getting an oil change. Great news: I had an extra oil change left on my maintenance program package, so this is free!
To celebrate, I’ll hopefully bring this monthlong look at songs that are now 40 years old back to earth. Here’s today’s song.
I Guess That’s Why They Call It the Blues - Elton John
And you’re thinking, hey, wasn’t Elton on the 1973 list, too? Why, yes, he was, thanks for noticing! He’d also be on the 1993 list if I were doing one (I won’t: my favorite album that year was John Hiatt’s Perfectly Good Guitar, so that will tell you where that countdown would be
).
If you’re thinking, “Wow, this is 40? Elton’s been around a long time!” just remember that his first album was released fifteen years before this one!!!! And, as I like to say about Elton, for a man who has the recorded output that he has, there’s far more hits than misses in his discography.
That shows why he’s one of the true legends in music history.
PS: your trivia: the harmonica is played by Stevie Wonder.
I Guess That’s Why They Call It the Blues
Written by Elton John, Bernie Taupin, and Davey Johnstone
Recorded by Elton John
From Too Low for Zero, 1983

Although I knew Elton had been around, I didn't really pay attention to him until the 80s. Oh yah this song somehow got stuck in my head back in the days . . . wasn't it played a lot? Stevie - another talent throughout the years!

@FourWalls I LOVE "I'm Still Standing" and listen to that every now and then these days!

It was the antithesis of the other hits from the album, which were far more rocking (“Kiss the Bride” and “I’m Still Standing”). So the MOR/“soft rock” stations played it a lot.

@FourWalls I remember his song “Sad Songs”, was that the name? He sold it to be used in a commercial for Sasson jeans. I had never heard of that brand until then. It was really catchy, no joke. I’m pretty sure he sang the jingle. He’s so talented even that didn’t hurt him!

I used to say about Bill Anderson (country singer): he needs to get a toupee that matches his face and age. Same with Elton.

I love this Elton John song and when it was often on the radio when things went wrong I found myself softly singing that's why they call it the blues,

It’s one of his 80s classics. What an amazing career he’s had!

That’s okay, I don’t remember them all, either.
Stevie also played harmonica on Elton’s 2001 album Songs From the West Coast.
