Lemon Grove in oil pastel

Thursday's art class was a lemon grove in oil pastel. The taxi came early to fetch me. I asked for a taxi for 1:30pm and it came at 1:25pm! It was the minibus taxi again, but I'm getting used to getting in and out of them now! He was belting down those country roads like there was no tomorrow! I was thinking I might have to tell the course tutor that I was late for class because the taxi driver got arrested for speeding! (It didn't actually happen, but I had a feeling it might!) We arrived at the hall at 1:35pm. (On a previous week the taxi only arrived at my house at that time!) I payed the taxi and went in the hall and, not surprisingly, I was the first one there apart from the tutors. I told them that my friend said she'll come with me to the September one. I got myself a cup of green tea using my T-bag again. I waited for it to brew for 3 minutes. There was an annoying fly buzzing around. I sat at the table I had been assigned to and started to drink my tea. Soon the other students started to arrive. The tutor said there was a lot of people away on holiday, including the lady with the scotty dog, so there was only me and Paul on our table and 5 more girls on the other table. The tutor started showing us what to do. We could choose which view we did, the whole of the lemon grove, or just a selection of lemons more in close up. I think I was the only one who chose to do the whole of the lemon grove. I started by drawing the outline in white oil pastel, then filled in any areas that were pure white, where the sun was shining on the wall and path. Then I filled in the lightest colour, so lemon yellow (appropriate) on the lemons followed by a darker cadmium yellow, followed by yellow ochre for darker areas in shadow. Then I did the leaves and branches, the two pots, the shadow on the path and the doors and walls and finally the wall. Paul keeps saying how good I am! He's good too! When I'd finished, half an hour early, I took the photo on my tablet that you can see above, and looked at it. I showed the tutor, and I also showed them some pictures of Sam Ryder that I have on my tablet. I said, should I draw him? The tutor asked Is that the guy that came second in the Eurovision song contest, and I said yes, and she said he looks like Thor! And I said, yes, it has been said. And he's also been called Jesus! And she said, yes, but we don't really know what Jesus looked like, and I said, yes, but he's always portrayed like that. Then I said, he would have been darker anyway, he wouldn't have been white, and then my tutor said, yes, he would have looked Arabic. And I said, he definitely wouldn't have had blonde hair!.And the tutor said, no, nor blue eyes! She said, are you a fan then? and I said yes. And she said, are you going to draw him? I said I don't know, I don't know if I'd do him justice! He's gorgeous! Just before we were going to go home a couple of the other students who had been on holiday came in. They'd just come back. They had with them a little girl and a golden retriever. We put our pictures on the floor to look at them, and the dog went near them. We were going Ah, ah! His owner called him.away. He said, he's alright, he usually just tip toes around them! Someone was admiring the one point perspective in my drawing! We put our pictures away and got ready to go home. The taxi driver was a new guy I hadn't had before, and he was in an ordinary car so I didn't have to climb into a minibus thing. He said he was the brother of the other chap. When he dropped me home I asked him to book me up for next week again, at 1:30pm and 5:00pm respectively. When I got in I told my Mum all about it and had my dinner. I Next week it's our first week of watercolour. Were going to be doing a colour wheel and we're going to practise mixing paints and then we're going to do a misty mountain.

Oil pastels are difficult to use, this lemon grove looks very well designed. I like watercolour.

Yes, they are. They are very thick and clumsy. You can't do intricate details with them. I enjoyed doing the lemon grove though. Thank you very much. I'm looking forward to doing watercolour.

@sharonelton I took an art class hoping to get instructions for painting but they gave us information on famous artist, and told the class we’d learn our own style of painting by practicing. It was a waste of my time.

Thank you very much, I'm glad you like it. It is fun, and you meet new friends too. Paul makes me laugh! He's always saying his pictures are awful and mine are fantastic, but his are good too! It's my pleasure.

@sharonelton Your art class sounds just lovely and your lemon grove is somewhere I’d love to sit on a hot afternoon in Sicily.
