Strange butterfly is it?

Kenya

Yesterday my kids were all over running crying insect! Insect! I told them to leave whatever creature it is alone. I didn't pay any attention since I was busy doing my laundry. Today they still showed me a creature on the wall. I took a picture of it. It has stayed there for long . I wonder what it is. Resembles a butterfly

As others have said, I think it's a moth too. This one looks big! We have all kinds here - I could not tell you what kind of moth they all are. Sometimes the ones that cling onto walls will stay there for a long time to the point you wonder if they are even still alive !

@Laurakemunto Oh no. Cycle of life I guess. Maybe they just stay still when they know their time is about done.

I'm sorry, but I can't see the image. It could be a different type of butterfly if it looks like one.

@Laurakemunto It appears now, but I don't think it is a butterfly. It's more like a cicada? Not really sure. I'm sorry. Take care.

@Laurakemunto It looks more like a large wood moth of some sort. It's quite well camouflaged there.

It is a moth and moths are slow and stay at one spot for long hours. Hope the moth was safe.

@Laurakemunto no it's a moth

It's a moth. The difference, or at least one of the differences is that a butterfly is a lot more colorful.
