This is the flash fiction story I wrote for my seminar on short story writing. I hope you enjoy it. "The Peanut Butter Cups" by DW Davis The package of peanut butter cups sat on her desk right where he had left them, waiting for her to arrive at work and find them. There was nothing special about them. He'd bought them at the convenience store where he stopped for coffee every morning on his way to work. Buying candy was not part of his routine, but he saw the peanut butter cups in the rack by the register. The package of peanut butter cups held down a note he'd written about how much he'd enjoyed their first date the previous Saturday afternoon. He'd finished by writing, "Maybe we can go out again sometime." She arrived at work and was glad he'd picked up his assignments and was out on his route. Her dread at seeing him again had built up since the end of their date. It wasn't that she'd had a bad time. She just wasn't impressed by his choice of movie to see after a pleasant dinner at her favorite restaurant. She'd left the choice up to him. In her opinion, he'd chosen poorly. She'd decided not to see him again and dreaded breaking the news because he was a nice guy. When she saw the package of peanut butter cups on her desk, she smiled and wondered who'd left them. Then she saw the note. She spotted his name at the bottom and almost didn't pick it up. But she did pick it up. She read it, and as she did, the combination of his words and the thoughtfulness of his gift made her reassess her opinion of him. When he stopped by the office at the end of his shift, she thanked him for the peanut butter cups and told him that, yes, she'd like to go out with him again. (c)2023 Douglas W Davis

That’s neat. I like your flash fiction. How many words can you have in flash fiction?

I'm glad you liked it. The basic guidance on flash fiction is between 300 and 1,500 words.

@RubyHawk As I'm going through this course, I'm looking at some of my short stories and realizing how little I really understood about writing them. The basics of the stories are good, but I loaded them down with too many unnecessary details.

@DWDavis I used to love and eat the peanut butter cups. I loved your story and so glad that he left what he did and that she changed her opinion of him after his thoughtful gift and note. I hope you get a good grade on it. Does everyone have to read their stories in front of the class?

In this seminar, we are not sharing our stories. I wouldn't mind reading it to the group though.

@DWDavis Would the teacher read it to the group since you do not share your stories with each other?

I did get a personal mention at the end of this afternoon's session when the instructor mentioned to the class that he and I had known each other for at least 10 years.

@DWDavis The other students will think you're "teacher's pet".

I know what you mean about craving the peanut butter cups. If I get to town tomorrow, I'm going to buy some.

Great story. I like how you were able to have a beginning, middle and end within 350 words. Good job! Enjoy your day.

I enjoyed this and thanks for sharing it. I hope you get top marks but maybe your tutor won't subject adults to 'marks' as such.

That's a very nice story and you can't judge a person right away because of what kinda movies they like.

Thank you. And I agree. You shouldn't judge someone based on just one thing.
