New Orleans Trip

Back at the beginning of June, my husband and I took a 4 day trip to New Orleans. We were there as messengers representing our church (in Tallassee, AL) at the Southern Baptist Convention. The convention experiences will be in a later post, But for this post, I want to talk about New Orleans. I had mixed feelings about the place. The homelessness was unreal. Some of them were just bums who are too sorry to work, so they litter the sides of the road and mooch off society. Others were there because life had been cruel and they hope this homeless life is temporary. Either way, its a bad situation. The history of the place is absolutely intriguing. The historical architecture is gorgeous. I wanted, so badly, to explore the town, but my husband would not comply. He believes the crime rate to be equal to that of a New York City subway. Finally on the last day, he agreed to let us ride the trolley, the oldest trolley in the city that stopped at many historical spots. When we went to pay the fare and board the trolley, the driver was extremely rude. He was so hateful, we had no intention of boarding that trolley. So maybe, I can go back one day and explore. There are gardens I want to see, museums I want to visit, and restaurant where I want to eat. I guess, to ease my hubby's mind, I will have to take a body guard lol.

I found Charleston much more interesting and lovely. We visited New Orleans quite a few years ago. It sounds like the homeless issue is worse there now. We did go on a super swamp tour.

@gnatsmom We found a lower cost motel that was right in the historic area of Charleston. The motel wasn't much to scream about but being able to open our door and walk into glorious history and architecture was super. I refuse to drive in big cities so we paid for a cab to take us to a plantation. Totally worth the moolah. Big bad news for us was the rain. Like a car wash in power. We still got out and went places cause we'd paid a lot of money and effort to be there but wow did we get soaked!!

I didn't like a lot of what I saw there, but then other parts were really cool. I guess that's like a lot of big cities.

If I get to go back and visit, I will avoid Bourbon Street. I have heard it is nothing but debauchery. I have no interest in seeing that. But I would like to visit museums and historical attractions.

I don’t think the crime in New Orleans is any worse than anywhere else. My brother loathes Chicago, but I told him that you just have to know what parts of town to stay out of. It’s the same where I live (Louisville), in places I was stationed (Norfolk, Jacksonville, etc.), and places I visit. There’s no “100% safe place.” Trust God and go see what you want to see.

What a shame the trolley driver was so rude. I would be a bit fearful in places like that too I think but I hope you're able to get back there and explore one day.

I’m sorry you didn’t get to see all the sights. You must be very careful. My son had his wallet with all his money stolen on the street in the middle of the city.

It is sad when there are places in the USA that are not safe
