Back in 2021 I stopped in Waterloo, Iowa and visited the Sullivan Brothers Museum. Today’s stop at the Buffalo Naval Park in western New York was a continuation, of sorts, of that trip. The Sullivans were five brothers who enlisted in the aftermath of Pearl Harbor, requesting that they receive a waiver of the rule prohibiting multiple family members from being stationed in the same duty station. The rule was in place for the reason that the Sullivans sadly demonstrated: all five brothers were killed when the USS Juneau was torpedoed. In honor of the brothers, the USS The Sullivans (DD-537) was commissioned in 1943. It was the first Naval vessel to be named for more than one person. The ship saw action in WW2 and Korea, and also did a lot of good (Apollo program) and difficult (Cuban Missile Blockade) assignments before being decommissioned in 1965. The photo is the Sullivans in the Buffalo Naval Park. In 2022 the ship that had survived two wars and multiple cruises faced a crisis when it sank in the harbor it’s moored in. One of the tour guides said that the primary problem is dealing with the severe water damage on the lower decks. Because of that, the Sullivans’ top two decks are the only portions currently available for touring. (The tour guide said it’ll be at least 2025 before the Sullivans can get to dry dock for repairs. ) Still, it was a joy to do an abbreviated tour of the boat. The Buffalo Naval Park is also home to the USS Little Rock and the submarine USS Croaker. Those two have plenty to see, including something I’d never seen on a ship tour before: admiral’s quarters! There was plenty for an old sailor to see and enjoy in the park…and, honestly, plenty to make me thankful that women weren’t allowed on ships when I was in!

I really wish they had not received the waiver.

Yeah, who’d think something like that would ever happen…and yet it did.

What a shame that only the two top decks are available for touring. Always better than no visits.

It was a shocking thing: they came to work and overnight the thing had listed about 18 degrees to port (left, away from the dock). The bad thing with museum ships is that the government doesn’t own them any long, so there’s no government funds for upkeep. They have a “Save the Sullivans” program going on to raise money for the dry dock repairs.

@LadyDuck — our government only gets rid of these ships when there’s nothing left to salvage.

@FourWalls That is a real shame that the Government does not own the ships. Private and companies not always take care of artifacts.

I think it's pretty cool that we preserve many of these old ships for the public to enjoy.

On the other hand, sometimes the government just won’t listen. There were massive attempts to save the original JFK (my brother’s ship) as a museum but the feds wouldn’t allow it.

@FourWalls I know there was a huge push to save the aircraft carrier America, but the Pentagon didn’t allow it either. They ended up using it for target practice to see how long it would take to sink her. They threw everything they could at her and she held on graciously to the end. Took forever to finally get her to sink.

I’m sorry I didn’t get to the lower decks. It sort of inspired me with what to do if I won a billion-dollar lottery…..

@FourWalls It will be good when they restore it. I hope when they do, you'll have the opportunity to tour her again.

i remember the story of the Sullivan brothers serving in the U S Navy during World War II. Sorry to learn that they all passed away during the war.

That’s what the “same duty station” rule was meant to prevent. Who’d think that the one family who requested a waiver would be the one lost.

They have programs where you can spend the night on the Little Rock (and I think some Sea Cadets were taking training there).

This is the first time I stopped in Buffalo to see things. The other two times I was passing through on the way to (or from) Niagara Falls.

My husband would love to tour the ship and submarine. I had enough ship touring in Fall River (?) MA to last me quite a while. Drive safely.

You have to be in good shape to navigate those ladders (stairs).
