I can’t believe this

I was craving for something sweet so went to the supermarket as that’s the only thing open now. Everything I looked at that was prepackaged (pies, turnovers, crumb cake, etc) had a very long list of ingredients including high fructose corn syrup. Many things I didn’t even know what they were. Didn’t want to get any of that stuff. Then I found a few small lattice pies. Seemed like those didn’t have lots of ingredients but there was mold on one so decided against it. Even though others had no mold, seeing it on one made me reject them all. Kept looking and found another batch of small pies. Those had little ingredients and I knew all of them. Was happy and ready to take two when I noticed the package said the pie contains bioengineered ingredients. No way! I did not expect to see that on a product that had no bad or unknown stuff in the ingredient list. As a last resort I went to the spot where they sell single fresh baked items for you to grab and put in a bag. Luckily there were a few things still there. That stuff probably has a big list of ingredients, but since they don’t disclose it on the shelf and I don’t actually know what it’s in it, I made an exception and got a donut and a muffin.

My sweet treat is bananas and ice cream. At least I know what's in it.

The only question then is how are the bananas grown and what do the cows eat lol.

@lovebuglena I'm pushing 60 yrs old. Been eating bananas and ice cream since I was in the high chair. My only vice is smoking, of which I am 46 yrs in. I enjoy challenging my immune system. I overcame a cancer diagnosis (13 yrs cancer free), a severe bout with pneumonia and pulmonary emboli. (blood clots in the lungs which I obtained when trying to quit smoking) I've never had a flu shot and never get the flu or common cold. I use too, but natural immunity came as a blessing. WHO CARES what the cows eat and how the bananas are grown??!! I'm going to enjoy the life I've been given for as long as the Good Lord has blessed me with it.

That mold in the pie is dangerous. The store owner should have removed it from the shelf. Good thing you were keen to have seen it. Anyway, it was nice that you make an effort to really look at the ingredients. But sad to say most of what we eat today are chemically-infused, which I attribute to our poor health as compared to our great grandparents.

If we start reading all the labels before we buy stuff we may not be left with much we will actually want to get.

@Yadah04 I’ve not looked at plant based stuff as I don’t buy it. I bet if I looked at the ingredients of that I’d not wanna eat any of it.

@lovebuglena That is right. But then again, good thing that some are becoming health-conscious already. Being vegan, keto, and all that.

I wonder how many ingredients those pies would have had in the 1950s.

It's amazing what's in food if you really look.

@lovebuglena A lot of it has to do with how food is processed and preserved. Makes no sense, but at the end of the day, it kind of does.

@kaylachan Makes me shake my head though. I bet back in the day the list of ingredients was minimal.

And I wonder why all that crap is necessary.

The ingredient list sometimes scares me away from buying an item.

When you read the ingredients most of the time it's scary. I put down everything containing corn syrup, palm oil and other unhealthy ingredients.

@LadyDuck I don't think it's good for us in high amounts and a lot of stuff seems to have it.

These days it’s hard to find stuff that doesn’t have soy lecithin in it. I don’t even know what it’s used for.

Oh the questionable ingredients in our processed foods . . . including mold . It makes me want to buy an organic cucumber and just eat that But well, a donut and a muffin sounds better .

@lovebuglena Natural . Well then maybe mold can count as a fuzzy herb . I don't know . . . I'd just not risk it. I mean it's possible it's growing elsewhere, or starting to but you just can't see it. Sometimes the stomach can handle it, but I sure don't want to risk getting sick.

@much2say I mean, the mold on fruit or bread or whatever is naturally ocurring. It's not manmade like moldy cheese (blue cheese and the like).

Well, mold is natural. I wonder if it’s ok to just cut out the part that has mold in it and eat the rest. I sometimes used to do that on white bread. If there was slight mold on crust but bread itself was fine I sometimes just cut off the crust and ate the inside.

Not a fan of cakes, especially if it has lots of creams in it.
