Clear Channel Memo Songs: I’m Goin’ Down

Well howdy! On the other side of the river today, for no good reason. I’ll give you another song, for no good reason. Here’s a song on the infamous Clear Channel Memorandum after 9/11…again, for no good reason. Sing along. I’m Goin’ Down - Bruce Springsteen Poor Bruce. Here he was, at the apex of his career, and he was catching 50 shades of holy heck for this album. People said the “Hey little girl is your daddy home” from “I’m on Fire” was implying an underage thing. Songs like “Workin’ on the Highway” and “Darlington County” did a little more than imply underage girls. And people griped that it looked like Springsteen was urinating on the flag on the cover! So throw a penalty flag on Clear Channel and give them 15 yards for piling on, or a late hit. To show the idiocy of this choice, Springsteen’s songs about mass murderer Charles Starkweather (“Nebraska”) and the violent death of Phil “The Chicken Man” Testa in “Atlantic City” (“they blew up the Chicken Man in Philly last night, now they blew up his house, too”) were NOT included on the list. Y’know, it’s said that the 70s teenybopper band the Bay City Rollers got their name from throwing a dart at a map and having the dart land on Bay City, Michigan. I’m wondering if Clear Channel didn’t employ a similar method in picking some of these songs.
