My Daughter Worries Me

My daughter is 51. She has been smoking since she was about 13 years old. She is getting short of breath and I am seeing some other things that could be due to her smoking. I want her to quit so badly She has tried several times and has not yet been able to quit. So now she is planning another try at it. She proposed to quit on her birthday, October 14. I have been discussing with her different ways to make this a success. Snacks and oral stimulation, patches, crafts, etc. Also to work on her anxiety which is a major issue and reason for her smoking. She says smoking calms her down. We have discussed anxiety pills like I take. She already has them. Woe is me. I have a real aversion to smoking. I watched some horrific doc in junior high, and my grandfather died of emphysema. It was horrible. He could hardly walk but a few steps without having to rest and get his breath. It was awful to watch. I don't want to see that in my daughter. So the other day I looked at her receipts when copying them onto Fetch and noticed she is now smoking twice as much as she used to. Not good! Now the job of quitting is going to be twice as hard. Oh, woe is me.

Hopefully she can quit. My daddy quit cold turkey. He told me he’d go for a run every time he wanted one. He got good at running and started to enter races.

My uncle had COPD, but I can't imagine seeing my own daughter go downhill like that. Has she had a serious talk with her doctor about it? I mean just total honesty about smoking more than usual, trying all these things, her anxiety medication not working, setting dates to quit and it not sticking...I know if it were a matter of "want", you would want it enough for her. No one wants to do this, but has she tried talk therapy along with anxiety medication?

She needs to have another one. Her anxiety medication needs to be upped. Talk therapy is a good idea. I will talk to her about this. I think her psych can help her with one where the psych is.

@celticeagle That would be good. Sometimes things we think will never end up working become the catalyst for a complete change.

@AmbiePam ......And it's really silly not to try different things until you find something that works.

I hope your daughter can quit smoking. I know it isn't easy but it must be even more stressful for you seeing that she's smoking twice as much.

My son is also trying to quit. He uses a water vape. It isn't harmful to the lungs like most vapes are. He says it helps. He's tried the gum. It didn't work. I hope she can find something that will work for her to help her quit by her birthday.

I got my daughter the Fum. She likes it. I think it is the water type. The gum is nasty. I keep hoping this time will be the one.

I am so sorry you are watching your daughter go through this. My Dad quit cold turkey when he was 35 because he kept developing polyps in his throat and the doctor warned him about getting cancer. He bought those hot candies called Atomic fireballs by the box and kept them in the glove compartment in his car. That's what helped him quit. Good luck to your daughter.

I hope we can find something that does the trick.
