Australian Broadcasting Corporation (ABC) Fact Checker provides a valuable service

The photo, if it will load, has nothing to do with the text. The Australian Broadcasting Corporation (ABC) launched Fact Check during the 2013 election campaign. This unit was created not to check on journalists’ reporting but to scrutinise the truth of claims put forward by politicians and public figures. Since its inception, the unit has delivered around 600 verdicts on statements made by such people. For instance, one politician stated that, in Queensland, every three months a person was torn to pieces by crocodiles. This is simply incorrect. Some statements are not strictly incorrect but data and events are projected in the best possible light, which is to be expected. However, start and end dates may shift, data may be omitted, important content left out and/or invalid apples-and-oranges comparisons made. Our Westminster system of government pits one political party against another so it’s no wonder that they vie for attention to try to secure votes. Non-political groups such as academics, industry/advocacy groups, trade unions were less inclined to skew information. I’m sure the situation is similar in most countries.

@JudyEv Politicians are now very aware of fact checking and are usually a bit more careful in what they claim. Not a bad thing.

It's a great thing. People are too keen on engaging their mouths before putting their brains in gear - or is it the other way around?

@JudyEv The big lie told during the Brexit campaign was that coming out of the EU would release £365 million a DAY that would go to the national health service and people bought it!!! I’m what universe was that going to be factually true?

It's very helpful and, knowing that they might be checked, helps keep everyone a bit more honest and careful about what they're spreading.

@JudyEv That’s excellent. People get so used to saying “whatever” that they don’t really double check what they are saying. Some people flat out lie, but some people just tend to exaggerate by nature.

@AmbiePam It's also easy to state things out of context or leave out certain facts. You really do have to be on your guard.

Well, use of social media by propaganda groups of Political party often has destructive capabilities. Here, social media is the first to get the beating and get banned when communal riots occur in a place. Then some politicians incite their voters in negative way. Often half truths or big lies are used. So yes, the scene is not good; not even in India ! But well, we need to move forward! Have a nice time!

It is not very different here, some stations are not reliable at all. I always double check the news comparing different sources.

@JudyEv I read online two major Italian newspapers, one is for the right party and one for the left (social communist) you cannot imagine how differently the news are reported.

That's a very good idea. Some stations/politicians can be very deceitful.

The BBC have a similar thing here in the UK although many would question their impartiality. I'm with Billy Connolly when it comes to politicians. Don't vote, it just encourages them!!

@JudyEv I assume a donkey vote is what we would call a spoiled ballot. I did that at our last local council elections. I drew an extra box, wrote "None of the above" next to it and put a cross in the box.

@WorDazza Yep, that's a good example of a donkey vote. Some put worse things on their paper.

That's a very good point but we get fined if we don't vote. I can't imagine how long it takes for the authorities to catch with those who don't though. You can always put in a donkey vote I guess.

It seems to me that politicians are out to entertain as best as they can and people just have to decide what they believe or don't believe,

Politicians want to remain in power by hook or crook in many countries. The facts are twisted to suit their interests. The people are sitting ducks into the bargain. Fact-checking will be a boon to them.
