An Early Wake Up Call

This morning when I woke up and heard a loud voice I thought it was men working outside. In a few seconds I realized it was someone at my door. I jumped an grabbed my bathrobe and rushed to the living room and There in the middle of my living room stood this huge man. The chair I had under the door knob knocked outside. Scared the heck outta me for a second, then I saw it was a maintaince man. He told me there was a water leak in my kitchen. We stepped to the kitchen and the floor was covered with water. While he started taking out everything under the sink, I went in the bathroom to wash my face and comb my hair. He finally found the leak and fixed it. But what a mess he left. I just finished cleaning the water from the floor and sat down to catch my breath. I dread to see what is wet and ruined under the sink and the other lower cabinets water was leaking into. I’m afraid it’s a mess to throw out. I’ll see how bad it is when the floor dries. I’ll likely be loading up a garbage bag.

I’m still sitting here thinking about it. It’s time I get to the kitchen and start clearing out. It was scary for a minute.

I cleaned all the water up and dried out the lower cabinets. It’s back to normal now. I didn’t have to throw much away. I’m glad it wasn’t worse. Makes me feel kinda good to know if the building was on fire someone would open the door and drag me out. Not to say I wasn’t startled to see my door open and a man standing in my living room.

Not a very pleasant wake up call. Something similar happened to me some years ago during the period when there was on and off water lock offs in our area. It seems a tap was left on so when the water came back on there was an overflow. It was God who woke me up otherwise the results would have been disastrous.

It was a horrible wake up call. I’ve had water leaks before from the upper apartment but it’s the first time from my apartment. Glad it worked out okay for you.

It's a horrondous situation you faced early in the morning. The leakages are very common in the kitchens. Any how the situation is worse, but you managed. Great!!!!

It was, but the leak is fixed and the kitchen is clean and back to normal. I’m concerned about the apartment below me. They might have a damaged ceiling.

@TheHorse I still don’t know about the apartment below me. I’ve rang their doorbell several times but nobody answers. I’m afraid their ceiling is terribly damaged. They might have moved out.

Do they not let you know when they are entering? It's a law here...they have to tell you, unless the place is on fire or something. I realize a flooded kitchen is dire, but they could have called you instead of how he entered. That would really bother me. I'm so sorry this happened to you. Dealing with floods inside is so, so not fun. And so much work!

It’s okay. Maintenance have keys to the apartments. If I’d been awake I’d have opened the door but I’m glad he was here before it got worse. I suppose the apartment below called about a leak. I don’t know how much damage they have down there. Whatever happened was in th middle of the night.

@MarieCoyle I do hope not. I feel bad for them. I’m notified on routine visits but this was an emergency. It gave me a shock at the time but I understand it was urgent and I’m glad he came on in. He had yelled and rang the door bell. He woke me up but I thought it was someone outside before I realized it was at my door.

@RubyHawk Our maintenance has keys, I have cameras that ding if someone comes to the door as well. But according to our lease, they have to notify us or at least attempt to call first before coming inside. I hope your neighbors didn't have a ceiling fall in or something terrible. What a mess for all of you.

How did the man get in your home? Does the landlord have a key? If it was my mother in this situation, she would leave right away!

Oh that is terrible!! Thankfully the leakage is taken care of, but yes it would have caused a lot of mess! Yet I do not understand how the huge man entered your house. This seems like a security concern, even for emergencies.

That was very inappropriate of him. A phone call should have been made. I know a leak is urgent but how did he know about it? Knocking the chair aside is scary. Time to get a safety door lock.

Why do maintenance men or in my experience plumbers leave a bigger mess than before when fixing something? You think the guy would have called out to let you know he was there. Leaky pipes can leave quite a mess. Hope your carpet can be dried out.
