Keeping Bird Baths Clean

I used to have a birth bath in our yard at my ex's place. It was fun to watch out the bedroom window and see the birds come and go. There's still a lot of time left to spend watching the birds enjoy the bird baths if you have one. I wish I had known then how to keep the thing cleaner. I have read an article that says putting some pennies in the water will help keep it clean and easier to keep it clean. You sure don't want the mosquitoes multiplying and algae and other growths to take place. Pennies are an excellent alternative to harsh chemicals and cleaners that are harmful to both the wildlife and environment. The pennies need to be changed every few months and pre-1982 ones are best because older ones have a higher ratio of copper and zinc which are toxic to birds. Please change the water occasionally too.

I don't know that pennies could make the water clean. I'm really ignorant about.

We have an old bird bath in our garden, but I don't know if it ever gets cleaned. It usually fills up.with rain water.

That's a shame. Not good for the birds to have dirty water.

I don't have a bird bath. But my friend has one in her backyard garden. She keeps it clean and changes water regularly. She has put some clean stones and pebbles in that. I guess that is just for aesthetics.

That is good to know about the pennies. Right now with two cats I will not get a bird bath.

It is funny you say that as I have had a cockatiel for a few years and this year I got a siamese cat. The cat is still a kitten and not even a year old. She goes over to the bird cage and watches the bird and sometimes looks like they are talking to each other. When we go out we do not let the cat stay in the same room as the bird as we don't want to take any chances. They look like they know what I am talking about when I tell they have to step back. My life hasn't been the same since we have her. Being very young she is soooo active and never sits still. I am getting a good workout without really trying.

@celticeagle The inside of an electric wire is better than a penny, here it is 100% copper. Copper also keep the water clean from bugs and particularly mosquito larvae.

That's why you need to use only certain pennies that don't have as much copper in them. I mention that in the post.
