Do you throw little things away?

I know many of you will think I’m taking hoarding to extremes, but I never throw anything potentially useful away, and I’m constantly surprised by the things other people throw out without a second thought. I’m talking about things like zips and buttons off old clothes, hinges and bolts off old doors, that kind of thing. Of course you end up with ‘clutter’ taking up space but then it comes in handy when you want to make something else. Our next project is a big pencil case for Little One, for example (why are shop-bought pencil cases always too short to hold a standard 30-cm ruler??) and I know we have some denim from old jeans and a choice of zips available. Yesterday I was looking for some new handles for a chest of drawers. I picked up the chest that a neighbour had left outside for the taking, it’s quite a nice piece although it needs a bit of tidying up and it has three drawer handles missing. So I was looking around for replacements, either to match the three that remain, which are a modern style, or some more old-fashioned type of handles that would fit with the style of the room better. The ones I liked best were these (hopefully the link will show up), £11.19 for two from Screwfix (which is one of the cheaper retailers). OK that isn’t going to break the bank, but I need six so that’s over £33 which in my book is quite a lot to spend on something many people would barely notice. I bet lots of people have thrown things like that out without a second thought. I decided I would come home and have a really good rummage about first to see what I could find at home, just in case I had something suitable already. If not I can buy them next time I’m in town, but I didn’t want to find out afterwards that I had bought new ones unnecessarily!

@fleura since we’re about to move to a new and very much smaller house (just one toilet would you believe) a lot of potentially useful things are having to go.

@BarBaraPrz At least I know what's in the box now, I may yet find another use for those!

I have to confess I am a bit of a hoarder myself... But you never know. Sometimes you find uses for stuff you otherwise would have thrown away. Reduce, reuse, recycle.

@Fleura Just did a quick search on what Freegle is. Don't think we have anything like that over here, but seems like an interesting idea!

Absolutely. Or else someone on Freegle asks for that very thing!

@moirai I am a keen devotee since I first found out about it about 20 years ago, which must have been soon after it started. At first it was Freecycle but then many in the UK didn't like how that was run so set up Freegle instead. I have given and received literally hundreds, perhaps even thousands, of things, everything from a sofa to a single rivet.

This is the message I got trying your link Access to was denied You don't have authorization to view this page. We never threw things, but now it's time to start to get rid of everything we do not need anymore. I am not going to throw, I will donate or sell what we can.

How odd that the Screwfix URL gives you that message, it's just a shop! Sorry. I can't imagine why it does that. If you really want to see what they look like it should work if you start at Screwfix.com (unless they are not available in Switzerland for some reason) and put the item number 168HP into the search box.

@Fleura I suppose that they do not respect the too severe Swiss security rules, so they do not let Swiss users see their shop. I started Screwfix.com before letting you know that it does not work, it gives the same message. I even tried with another computer, no way!

@LadyDuck I have to give you credit for trying! I hope the photo issue gets fixed soon so then I can at least show you a photo of the finished article!

No I didn't. I had a good look and found some nice ones but not enough of the same type that would fit in the same holes.

Most things, I find, have a second or third or more use. So, I save whatever I can, and there have been many times when I have saved something ridiculous that turned out to be EXTREMELY useful and helpful.

@Fleura I have cans full of this thing, that thing, and the other thing in the garage, and I always find it useful.

We always kept extra buttons, screws, and other odds and ends just in case, but they mostly went unused. But that ONE time, that ONE time, you find a use for a singular item, boy do you you feel vindicated for saving all of that stuff.

As you say, you end up saving everything and only using some of it, but definitely more than just one time! But my button tin is coming up to its fourth generation of accumulation now

My wife is the worlds worst hoarder. Unbeliebably keeps everything & throws nothing away. Some peoples rubbish is someone elses treasure!
