Young Sheldon - Do you watch it? Got a question...

How is it that Sheldon's entire family has a very thick Southern accent, even the Grandma, yet somehow Sheldon (and possibly his sis) DO NOT. Even the older brother, George Jr., has the deepest Southern accent of them all. I mean I could see if they all previously lived in Georgia or Kentucky and then they moved to somewhere like the East Coast when the parents had Sheldon and his sister, but still. They would have either still picked it up from the rest of the family, or the rest of the fam's accents woulda slowly faded out. Please share your thoughts on this urgent topic. I'll be waiting. And there, I started a discussion without a pic. It physically hurts, but I can take it. Thank you

I’ve never watched the show, but you do bring up a good point. Maybe it’s done intentionally, like to show the high IQ of Sheldon in contrast to the rest of his family. One of my best friends is British, yet he doesn’t speak with a British accent at all. His entire family, including his brother who is only a year older than him, speak with heavy British accents. But my buddy sounds just like any other American when he speaks.

I guess it's something you can choose, if you decide to work on it. Thanks Jeff! And you're right, first paragraph.

@Melanie_Marie I hope you continue to enjoy the show! And happy Friday to you! I hope you have a fun weekend planned. I’m in Chicago this weekend for a paintball tournament.

@Melanie_Marie I play for a team. There are five men on the field at a time for each team (two teams battle each other), so it's not every man for himself. We all back each other up. We have 10 men on our team, so we rotate players in throughout the matches so that we keep players as fresh as possible. We can play up to 120 games a day during tournaments, so it's pretty intense and action-packed. We did win the tournament, our second tourney win in a row. And both wins came in Majors (if you follow golf, you know what I'm talking about). There are dozens of national tournaments each season, but only four of them are Majors. We are now towards the end of our season and only have World Cup left, which will be at the beginning of November. Children of the Corn is a great name for your plant, if it is indeed corn (and if it's not corn, it's still a great name! haha).

I’m from Oklahoma, and my dad has a country (Southern) accent, but my sister and I don’t have an accent at all. People assume if you live in certain parts of the country you always have to have an accent, but it’s just not true. Of course, also in The Big Bang Theory, where all these characters appeared in adult form, all of those characters were given accents, and it would be weird if they didn’t have them in the prequel. Plus, I have noticed writers give Southern accents to people they want to appear less smart than the main character. Sheldon, being the genius, wouldn’t be written with an accent. It’s a good show, isn’t it.

I do not have the accent of my ancestors, as I did my best growing up not to have an accent, so people do not know from which region I come from.

@Melanie_Marie Professionals try to hide their accent. I always did my best and we had lessons to learn to speak a "clean" Italian without accents. I am from Milan, north of Italy, it's not a mystery.

I posted a discussion without a picture too but the topic was a black cat so I'm hoping people will be able to use their imaginations.
