Another Scary Day at UNC-Chapel Hill

It was 3 weeks ago that a graduate student shot and killed his mentor/advisor in a science lab on the UNC campus, sending the place into lockdown for 3 hours or so. Son2's fiance was on campus and working in the building next to where the shooting took place. Today, at the UNC student union, a person pulled a gun at the bagel shop. Eyewitnesses indicated it seemed like the argument that led to the brandishing of the weapon was an employment-related issue. This incident led to another lockdown lasting over an hour. No shots were fired. No one was hurt. Son2's GF works in the building housing the student union. Needless to say, she's very upset. Why is it that here in America the only answer for too many people is to pull a gun when things don't go their way? I have my own theories. Why do you think America is like this?

People have to learn to control their rage. They do things without thinking twice. Have a good day.

Today's young people are often raised by parents who never let them fail, face adversity, or know disappointment and are thus unable to handle it when it comes. They react violently when things don't go their way.

I sure hope so. Poor GF is such a wreck now. Another such incident is likely to cause her to quit school altogether, which would be truly tragic as she's set to graduate next May.

@DWDavis I hope nothing else happens. I can understand her being scared. Could she do some of it at home online?

@wolfgirl569 I don't know if her current job is one she could do remotely.

I think it's that age old constitutional amendment that states we have the right to bear arms and defend ourselves ..... the concept of defend seems to have been misconstrued.

That whole amendment has been misconstrued. Once state militias disappeared, so did the reason for the amendment. When looked at in the context of the times, 2A was about states being allowed to maintain armories for the storage of powder and shot for use by the militia for training and in times of war.

That's right, I'd forgotten all that. That's one amendment that needs to be rethunk and probably deleted if that's possible.

I guess the 'right to bear arms' goes so far back in history that it is ingrained in the psyche of many. Let's hope Australia never reaches this point.

My best theory that comes from persons in the ministry is that people do not care about the consequences of their actions using violence to settle a dispute instead of reaching an agreement that we all need to be corrected once in a while when errors are made.

I think your children need more personal involvement with their parents in their childhood to grow up into well organized adults.
